Maine Mining History

   Maine mining has produced a number of interesting personalities and the products of the mines have received international attention. The biographies, genealogies, mining site descriptions, specimen descriptions, etc. here recapture some of  the history of Maine mining.
  An invitation is extended to the public to recount family history involving Maine mining activities. Miners, mineralogists, etc., are invited to provide their stories, biographies, excerpts of letters, newspaper acounts, etc.  Photographs and/or genealogical information are welcome. In particular, the author has had inpreparation for nearly ten years a biography of Shavey Noyes and George Howe and pertinent information is solicited.

George "Shavey" Noyes,
(1863-1945)
circa 1888, Norway, Maine
Shavey was owner of the Noyes Mountain Quarry, Greenwood, Maine. He was an avid mineral collector and occasional mineral dealer. He helped George Howe found a youth group which inspired the Boy Scouts.

Garage Sale
  For being able to read and cite from the "Lost" diary of Dr. Hiram Francis Abbott, lobster dinner for two or equivalent. Homemade apple pie, quality French white wine, and I'll wash the relevant dishes!!
   The diary was in the possession of Thurston Cole of Rumford Point, Maine at least by the mid-1960s. He had no heirs and the diary went "somewhere"
