How were central Maine miners related?
There was a reasonably stable and growing population in Oxford County by 1800. Just through the coincidence of living, many Maine mining families are related by marriage. The following is a first attempt at noting who was related.
1. Nathan Perry (1830-1890; resident of Woodstock and later South Paris). His older brother, Bartle Perry married Amarath Carter of Paris Hill. She was sister to lawyer and one time editor of the Oxford Democrat, Samuel Rawson Carter who mined Mount Mica about 1863-1864. Samuel Carter married Julia Hamlin, sister of Dr. Augustus C. Hamlin.
2. George Howe's great Uncle was named for the elder Dr. Cyrus Hamlin. George's second cousin, Mary Howe, married Dr. Joseph Abbott Nile (resident of Rumford) who was one of the early miners of Newry in 1902. Nile was a partner of Dr. Hiram Francis Abbott and Hollis C. Dunton, both of Rumford Point and with Waldo Pettengill and Hugh J. Chisholm, both of Rumford. William, Dean, and Phil McCrillis are related to Dr. Abbott.
