The following is an excerpt from the Pynelis Journal of August 6, 1894 that tells about Edmund Bailey guiding James R. Jenkins and John W. Suter up Old Blue Mountain, Maine.
"Aug. 6 J. R. J. & J. W. S. ascend Old Blue, taking Mr. Edmund Bailey for companion and guide. Left Pynelis about 7:30. Began ascent at 9:30 from Cedar Hill on the Lake Road, just beyond five mile-post. Reached summit at 12:30. Began descent at 2:40, and came down in 1 hour and 50 minutes. Considering there is no trail whatever, travelling good except in scrubby spruce growth near top. Flashed to house with great success. No Response from [Mt.] Washington. Found A. M. C. [Appalachin Mountain Club] bottle left by Prof. Lanza in 1880, and added thereto. Until this year no ascent since then on record. Mr. Bailey was on top July 24 of this year with Mr. Fox. Account of Prof. L's trip is in "Appalachia" of May 1881. Hoisted a flag on top, and it being Feast of Transfiguration, inscribed upon it [Phrase in Latin here] from the Gospel for this day. "In making ascent, rounded first the spur where Lion Bluffs are, and later followed a branch of Beaver Brook and a logging road a little way, but in brush, crossed two branches of brook and took compass line to top. The top as seen from Pynelis pasture is left part of double nubble towards center of ridge." |
