M.Tech (IT) – Wireless Communication & Computing

We are experiencing exponential growth rates in wireless communication systems, ubiquity of mobile devices, and deregulation of former monopolized markets. While traditional communication paradigm deals with fixed networks, mobility raises a new set of questions, techniques and solutions. For many parts of the country, wireless and mobile communication is the only solution due to the lack of appropriate fixed communication infrastructure. The trends mentioned above create an ever increasing demand for well-educated communication engineers who understand the developments and possibilities of wireless communications.

This highly specialized and dynamic field needs brilliant minds. The rigorous selection procedure of this one-of-its-kind M.Tech program has GATE qualification in Information Technology, Computer Science or Electronics & Communication, as its pre-requisite. Screened candidates then go through three-tiered in-house tests, viz. written, practical and an arduous interview, fashioned according to the background of the candidate and the needs of the program.

The course contents are meticulously engineered keeping in mind the current and future requirements of the wireless and the mobile industries. While the first semester develops the basics in communication and networking, the next two semesters concentrate on wireless and mobile systems. Live projects are quintessence of this program. Students are required to work on several such projects including one mini project in the third semester and one major project spanning the complete fourth semester. Some of the current and future projects are Service discovery, QoS Routing algorithms for Mobile Ad-Hoc networks, TCP for Wireless LANs, SMS Lists, L2 and L3 VPNs, Internetworking of ATM, PoS and MPLS, Internet telephony, development of SIP gateways and Software, Low Latency Protocols vs. Myrinet Cluster Benchmarks, ISP Setup, LAN/WAN Security etc. The complete course outline is presented below.

To facilitate students to gain practical knowledge of subjects and to carry out advanced research and development activities in the field of wireless communication a state-of-the-art laboratory has been setup particularly to cater needs of M.Tech students. The lab is equipped with the following hi-tech gadgets: P-IV PCs, Laptops, Routers, Switches, ADSL Modems and Routers, Cable Modems and Routers, ISDN Routers, Wireless LAN Access Points and PCMCIA, Bluetooth PCMCIA, Card Phone GSM, Cellular Data Card, Connectivity Card etc.

Armed with such profound and exhaustive knowledge of Wireless, Mobile and Networking in general, students are ready to fit in with ease into commercial as well as research-oriented organizations.
