Potholes - South Africa

The curious quirks of water in motion have left extraordinary potholes in the rocks of the Blyde River. These are known as 'Bourke's Luck' Potholes after the owner of a once profitable gold mine nearby, Tom Bourke.

The Blyde River (meaning 'joy') was named by the wives of Voortrekkers who had assumed their travelling menfolk were dead when they did not return from an expedition - only to joyously meet them on the banks of this river.

The Blyde flows through some spectacular gorges along its course to meet with the Blyde Dam in its Canyon, at the nature reserve.
