COMPARATIVE

PHILOSOPHY

Understanding the theories of Nietzsche and Kant

WHAT SPECIFICALLY IS BEING STUDIED?

This course is designed to expose students to philosophical thinking and what many consider to be two theories in philosophy that are opposite of one another.  In short Kant's closely held theory was called the Categorical Imperative (CI). The CI basically states that the ends (end result) in themselves are the basis for all action.  The CI is based on a sense of duty.  By each human being holding tight to this concept of human duty the overall human condition would improve.  You donate money to charity out of duty.  You do not feel sorry for people or want to look good. You donate out of duty...................because you should.

Nietzsche's theory is the polar opposite of Kant's.  Nietzsche believes that there is no good or evil or really right or wrong. He believes that there is only weak and strong. The strong rule over the weak. The weak do whatever they can to divert resources from the strong. The world should be ruled by SUPERMEN....the strong. The basis of his theory is The Will to Power.

  2. Review the PowerPoint presentation associated with each lesson.
  3. Step away from the lesson and think for a day or two.
  4. Go back to the PowerPoint presentation and review it.

Here are the important things with each lesson. First that you understand the passage.  Second that you convey YOUR thoughts on the passage.  The first section (understanding) is smaller than the second section (thoughts).  The idea is if you can explain your thoughts in some detail I will also be able to determine you understand at the same time.
