Week 1 – Computers and your possible career

Some students are enrolled in Computers Applications – ROP to learn about computers for personal or academic use.  Other students to get credit for graduation.  Even some are exploring computers as a possible career.  For whatever your reasons you will find this learning experience valuable and applicable for whatever you do.  Well let’s get started!

Have you considered a career and how a computer might fit in?  Some might use a computer as a tool.  For example an auto mechanic will use his hands to repair a transmission, but it will likely be a computer that will tell him it needs repair.  A manager of a t-shirt shop will rely on a computer to make sure the store has enough sizes and colors of shirts to keep inventory flowing.  How do you see yourself using computers?

Assignment - Using the below hyperlink find 4 jobs in the computer field and explain why you find these jobs as a possible career path for you.  Explain in some detail what the career is and why it might be good for you.  The total assignment should be 2 pages long, each career description should be 2-3 paragraphs.  Don’t forget the most important element. Why do you think this might be a good career for you.

Week 2 – Word Processing / Desktop Publishing

Microsoft Word is one of the premier word processing programs available today. People use MS Word to do desktop publishing.  Desktop publishing entails some of the following items:

·         Informal/Formal letters

·         Brochures

·         Flyers

·         Web Pages

·         Business cards and stationary

·         Most other things considered "documents"

MS Word has many nice features such as spell checker and automatic sorting to make creating documents easy and fun.  The best way to learn how to use this program is explore the pull down menus and get excited about the different features available to you.

Assignment – Using MS Word write a letter to your principal requesting permission to hold an ASB fundraiser.  Make sure you outline you plan from beginning to end.  You should include all needed supplies and how you plan to make money.  Also include a sample flyer you plan to put up around campus.

Week 3 – Creating Databases through Spreadsheets

When you open up a checking account at your local bank the first thing the bank does is put you in a database.  The bank representative will ask you questions like your name, social security, address and other things. This information is being directly imputed in the bank database and they associate this information to a particular checking account number.  The bank will spend millions of dollars each year keeping this database up to date.  MS Excel is the most common software program used to keep track of information.

Above is a snap shot of a sample database.  Each small area is called a FIELD.  So the name Douglas Perez is in one field and Pomona appears in another field.  A bank will have 20-30 different fields for each customer for each account.  For this reason the bank has special database software written to keep them organized.

CRUNCHING NUMBERS

A spreadsheet can also be used to keep track of numbers.  So the bank uses a spreadsheet program to keep track of you and a different spreadsheet to keep track of your money.  These spreadsheets have formulas so that once you put a number in the total can be automatically computed. Here is a sample budget:

mortgage

 $    1,500.00

19%

taxes

 $       250.00

3%

insurance

 $        60.00

2%

home maint

 $        50.00

1%

until

 $       300.00

4%

 $2,610.00

The great thing about a spreadsheet is that when you change a number you do not have to re-compute your numbers.  This is done automatically ONCE YOU SETUP THE SHEET.  Download a sample of the required sheet.

Assignment 3A – Create a database of all the participants in the Week 2 ASB event.  Use the above sample to create a 20 person list.

Assignment 3B – Create a comprehensive budget for your ASB event.  Include what percent each item is of the total budget spent.

Week 4 – Using HTML editors

Microsoft FrontPage is the software program that many people use to create web pages.  Using MS FrontPage for a technology survey course is not necessary, but a good habit to start.  MS Word can be used to create simple web pages, but if your goal is simply to create a web page, and no other document, this is a good program.

MS FrontPage is very user friendly.  Once you have done a flyer in MS Word then there is not much more learning to create a web page in MS FrontPage.  To see how easy it is download the online demo to see subtle differences in MS Word and MS FrontPage.

Assignment – Using MS FrontPage create a web page for your ASB events.  Make your you have 4 hyperlinks and 4 email links to help the person looking at the page be able to get more information if they need.

Week 5 – Creating computer slideshow presentations

Microsoft Resource

Using MS PowerPoint

PowerPoint creates slide shows for your computer.  Slideshow presentations are used in business, primarily to educate people on products and services offered by companies and individuals.  In education teachers present lessons in PowerPoint and students often summarize chapters in college as a way of conveying understanding.  Using PowerPoint will likely be a lifelong tool.

What's specifically is PowerPoint?

PowerPoint is little mini flyers grouped together.  Instead of calling them flyers each piece of the presentation is called a slide.  PowerPoint slides usually have text and graphics (pics).  Some advanced presentations will have music and video.

Assignment - Using concepts from your flyer, create a MS PowerPoint presentation for a school OR group of products or ASB event.  Please have a minimum of 8 slides include text and graphics,
