In a futuristic time, men and women were separated, and had no contact. The planet inhabited by only men was known as Talark, and the planet of women was called Meijir. Unfortunately during a pirate raid and a ship transformation, three (UN) fortunate guys end up on a pirate ship filled with women. After some time, the three guys are accepted into the pirate ship: one as a pilot of the mother ship, the Nirvana, one as a doctor, and one as a mecha pilot. The story focuses around Hibiki, the mecha pilot. He controls a mecha called a Vanguard, whilst three girls pilot three different fighter ships, each called dreads. After an unusual transformation that changed the structure of their ships, the Vanguard is then enable to combine with a Dread to form the Vandread. There are three different Vandreads. Vandread Dita, Vandread Jura, and Vandread Meia. Dita, Jura, and Meia are the three pilots of the Dreads that have some "affection" for Hibiki. The Nirvana is trying to return back to their home planet, and to protect them from the body harvest.
This series combines excellent CG space battles with regular animation. There is also plenty of humour, and a lot of stuff that would make it a "guy" series, such as some girls with rather large busts, wearing skin-tight clothes, and lots of space battles. Of course, girls can enjoy it too!
A few times this show can make anyone laugh so hard it could knock the wind out of him or her. The atmosphere of guys getting stuck on a ship where there are hot girls is a good atmosphere for laughs! ; )
There is one problem though. Each battle seemed like the graphics and background were too dark, moved way too fast and too many things on the screen at once. But that doesn't bother me much. Vandread is still one of the best animes I've seen so far.
Characters
Hibiki Tokai - Hibiki is the main guy of the series and pilot of the Vanguard. Since boarding the Nirvana, he had begun his first contact with women. Often making few wrong moves he is occasionally called a pervert and slapped. He is continually hounded by Dita and Jura, trying their hardest to gain their attention to him. While living on Talark, a planet inhabited by only men, he was a third class citizen, only ate energy pellets, and had a pretty messed up life. He took up a dare to sneak into a military facility to steal a Vanguard, but was caught. Hibiki's character was a typical idiot, which fit in this comedy.
Dita Lebily - Dita is the pilot of one of the Dreads. She often hounds after Hibiki, giving him food and small presents. Although he doesn't appreciate it much, she still cares for him. Considerably the 'ditz' of the series, she often calls Hibiki "uchuujin-san" or "space alien". In a Christmas special, Dita and Hibiki had exchanged gifts, which was something geared for the people they liked *hint* *hint*
Meia Gisborn - Another Pilot of the Dreads, Meia is the leader of the team. During an incident in which she was critically injured, Jura had to lead the team, which quickly fell apart. She is a very independent character, and many people look to her for leadership. She was the daughter of a very prestigious scientist, but after a fraud was discovered, people looked to her as a girl that once tried to be famous. After an attack on her planet, her mother had sent her off on an escape ship. Meia then began emotionally tear apart, getting into brawls and great t rouble. When she encountered Magno Vivian, she then became a member of the pirates, one of the best, mainly because she had the natural talent to be that good.
Jura Basil Eldin - The third pilot of the Dreads, Jura is probably the most romantically attracted to Hibiki. After watching Hibiki eat Dita's cooking, she then became jealous and then made attempts to gain his attention and eat her cooking. She is the last person to do the Vandread combination with Hibiki, and when she did, Jura had Barnett tape the entire thing. She is VERY scantily clad, and acts the most glamorous of the three Dread pilots.
Duero McFile - Another first class citizen of Talark, Duero was the only doctor on the ship. He bears moral correctness, and even there was war between the men and women, he still acted as a medic to anybody that was hurt. To him, a patient is a patient, regardless of anything. If someone gets injured, he is often there to help bandage or do surgery.
Bart Garsus - Before boarding the Nirvana, Bart was a first-class citizen on Talark. Often cowardly and running away, he was eventually found when Magno had her pirates invade. He is the only person who is able to pilot the Nirvana, proving his use on the ship.
