Samurai Deeper Kyo focuses around fictional events that took place during the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 AD within Japan. During the battle, two samurai clashed swords and, in turn, became bitter enemies: Kyoshiro Mibu and the titular character "Demon Eyes" Kyo. During their showdown, a meteor strikes the battlefield and ends the fight. Because of the meteor, Onime-no-Kyo's spirit has taken over the body of his rival Kyoshiro, who is acting as a medicine man.

Four years pass. Kyoshiro is hunted by a bounty hunter named Yuya Shiina. During their encounter, something far more serious comes into play. They are attacked by a monster and, in the ensuing crisis, the medicine man reveals a deep secret: "Demon Eyes" Kyo's spirit had been locked inside of him. Following Kyo's reappearance, the future of mankind will be changed forever.

Later on, during their travels, the recently cooperative pair of Kyo and Yuya meets other interesting people as they search for Kyo's body, so he can once again become the most powerful warrior in the world.

Characters

Onime no Kyo - At the battle of Sekigahara, a legend named Demon Eyes Kyo was born. Called the thousand-man slayer, Kyo was unopposed during most of the battle. But another samurai named Mibu Kyoshiro stood before him. These two had waged a war of their own until that day, when they would finish it. But an unprecedented event happened during their fight... a shooting star slammed into the ground right where they were fighting. Because of that, Onime-no-Kyo's spirit has taken over the body of his rival Kyoshiro, who is acting as an herbalist. Kyo decides to use this new body to get to his former body and restore himself to his original form. How all this got started, I'm not really sure, because the story doesn't do much explaining-it just sort of happens.
Four years later, a bounty hunter named Yuya Shiina met a medicine man named Kyoshiro. Apparently there was a bounty on his head for skipping out on a restaurant payment. This is where things get crazy. First a Demon comes after Kyoshiro claiming he is Demon Eyes Kyo. He starts wailing on Kyoshiro until Sasuke and Saneda show up. Then Kyoshiro changed to Kyo. Tossing Kyo kis sword from Sekigahara, Saneda unleashes the Demon. Using the Red Mirage, an attack that forces a foe to face their inner demons which ulimately destroys them, the Demon was disintegrated in a spray of blood.

Benitora @ The Shadow Master - He is in fact the only son of the Tokugawa family, however his name is a disgrace to his own honor and so he changes his last name. While not being on Kyo's level of skill, he is still an amazing fighter, as seen when he survived the Red Mirage (only because Kyo used a wooden sword). He gave up the tournament they were in when he did that because he knew another would definitely kill him.
Obtaining one of the five true Muramasa, he was able to kill an insect that nobody else could even attack. However, the weapon is cursed only to work for a Tokugawa, and because he disregards his heritage it doesn't always work for him. But when it does work, it sucks part of his soul in little by little. Benitora is also the only man to ever un-horse Nobunaga using the Seven Shadow Thrust, although injuring himself in the process.

Yukimura Sanada @ Yukino - He is the type that you can deceive others very easily. Most of the time, you'll think that he's a carefree person, the one that never know when to be serious. Reason being, he always have a warm smile on his face, talk soft and nicely, and even at the worse situation he can still make jokes and laugh about it. But you should never be tricked by his smile during serious times! For, behind his warm gentle smile, it hides a very intelligent brain and great sword skill. While he's showing his smile, thousands of ideas might have flashed in his intelligent mind. And before you notice it, he might already do something very surprising, yet very affective move, which saved everyone's life.
If you don't know him at all, you might also think he's just another one of those people on the street, drinking Sake while picking up girls... Because of his great talking skill, he can easily get a total stranger to talk to him about anything. So it's quite effective, when used towards picking up girls.
Yukimura always treat his followers and friends with cordiality, that's what gain him the absolute loyalty from people of his clan and the Sanada Juu Yuushi. He never make that "I'm your master you must serve me" face. After his father's death and his older brother's "disappearance" he automatically became the Head of the Clan. At that moment he received his position in the clan, he also took responsibility for all of his people. He was determined to do whatever he could for all of his people, and at this age of time, it is to become the ruling clan in Japan.
