The setting is in a world where aliens of an alternate dimension known as Murians, has invaded Tokyo. In less than a day, Tokyo has been occupied so fast that the inhabitants within it don't even realise what has happened. The Murians then secretly started to convert the residents into one of them while making them believe that the area outside Tokyo never existed. In order to protect itself from the humans, a barrier in the form of a sphere, looking like a mini version of Jupiter, has been set up. This gives the Murian fortress the name of Tokyo Jupiter where time passes by slower than the rest of the world as the result of the barrier made.

The story begins with a high school student in Tokyo Jupiter, Kamina Ayato, suddenly found himself caught in the midst of a massive air strike by an unknown aggressor. Ayato was then confronted by a mysterious woman, Haruka, who claims that the world he’s living in is currently controlled by Murians. Thinking the woman was crazy, Ayato ran away and was then led by a friend, Mishima to the bio-robotic life-form RahXephon. After mysteriously synchronizing with Rahxephon, Ayato soon finds out that what the woman said is indeed true. He even witnessed a weird incident where his own mother seems to show signs of being an alien. Using RahXephon’s abilities, he managed to cross the barrier dividing the two worlds.

Being able to pilot RahXephon made Ayato an asset to the world beyond Tokyo. Therefore, he was quickly accepted into a military organization known as Terra. However, his life in the new world is not as nice as he expected. He soon finds out that he is not a normal human. Although his transformation into a Murian is not yet complete, many people are already treating him as though he is one. Finally, Ayato realizes his role as an 'Orin' and uses his ability to return the world to its normal state.

There are tons of twists and turns in this anime. You'll instantly get hooked after the third episode, and you'll just want to continue watching it until the 26th episode. The story is very deep and requires multiple viewings in order to fully understand everything. Overall, RahXephon is a fantastically written anime; from its brilliant art direction to the catchy Jazz music. I will definitely recommend this to all anime lovers.

Characters

Ayato Kamina – Ayato is the main character and pilot of RahXephon. He is a teenage boy living in ‘Tokyo Jupiter’ whose world is flipped upside down when he discovers the truth: Tokyo, under the control of the Mu is encased from the rest of the world by a giant barrier where time goes by much slower than the rest of the world. One day, he met a mysterious woman, Haruka Shitou, who explained the truth of the world he’s living in. Soon, Ayato makes it out of Tokyo Jupiter after finding RahXephon with the help of a good friend Mishima Reika.
Once out of ‘Tokyo Jupiter’, he was taken to Nirai Kanai, where the organization Terra resides. Because of his ability to pilot RahXephon, he was recruited into Terra and was sent to live with Haruka and her sister, Megumi. At first, Ayato couldn’t accept the changes that’s happening around him but he quickly adepts and soon befriends many people in Nirai Kanai.

Haruka Shitou – Haruka lives in the ‘normal’ world and works in the organization, Terra. Haruka and Ayato were originally in love many years ago since they were teenagers, but when the Mu arrived, they were separated. Haruka on the outside world continued to live her life. Ayato on the other hand didn't age at all since Tokyo Jupiter's time went by so slowly. When they are eventually reunited in Tokyo Jupiter in the first episode, Ayato didn’t recognise her. Haruka cares for Ayato deeply but only she knows the truth about the relationship they had. She did not tell anyone about their relationship because she's now 12 years older than Ayato. She then helps Ayato adept to life beyond Tokyo Jupiter, guiding him through some of his toughest times there. Haruka is good friends with many members of Terra. She is an outgoing, intelligent and strong woman, liked by all.

Mishima Reika - Mishima Reika is a mysterious girl. She is a friend of Ayato at his school in Tokyo Jupiter. She often appears and disappears throughout the show. Despite seemingly dying in the third episode, Mishima continues to appear to Ayato, but mostly when he's in RahXephon and when he is in grave danger. She is often referred to as Ishitori by many people, such as Maya and Quon. The mystery deepens when she called herself Haruka and disappears later. In the end, it is revealed that she is the ‘soul’ of RahXephon that took on Haruka’s physical appearance (but her hair is brown instead) when Haruka and Ayato met many years ago.

Quon Kisaragi - Ayato first meets the mysterious Quon on the Liyta Litobeck while being transported to Nirai Kanai. Quon immediately takes a liking to him, although never calls him Ayato, but 'Orin' instead. Quon lives with Itsuki Kisaragi as his sister (although they aren't really related). She is well liked by all at Terra. She is quite mysterious however, often undergoing tests and displaying the same mark on her stomach that Ayato has. Quon meets Mishima who reveals that she too is an Orin and has a RahXephon-like mecha of her own. She then returns to Tokyo Jupiter with Ayato. While there, the egg of Quon’s ‘Rah’ appears and then vanishes along with her. In the end, Quon, in her ’Rah’, battles with Ayato in RahXephon and was defeated. This causes the world being created again.

Megumi Shitou - Megumi is an Operator Trainee at Terra, first introduced when Ayato arrives at Nirai Kanai. She has a crush on Souchi but was unaware of Souchi’s relationship with Kim. She didn’t get along with Ayato at first, but after a while she started to develop feelings for him. Megumi longs to be a normal girl and wishes to attend school like everyone her at age. She is very cute and cheerful most of the time.
