“Ouran Private Academy is defined by one, prestigious families, and two, wealth.  And prosperous people have much time on their hands.  Therefore, this Ouran Host Club is about these handsome guys that have time giving hospitality to these lovely ladies that also have time and profit off of them.  It’s an elegant game unique to this super-rich school.”

The students of Ouran High School come from rich and powerful families with the exception of Haruhi Fujioka.  She is very studious and thus, managed to enter the prestigious school by earning a scholarship.  While looking for a quite place to study one day, she chances upon the third music room where the Ouran Host Club operates.  In the midst of trying to squirm her way out of the situation, she accidentally breaks a Renaissance vase worth approximately 8 million yen.  To pay it off, she is then put to work as the club’s ‘dog’, in charge of menial chores.

Haruhi is then promoted to an official host when the other members realises her potential (at this point, the Host Club members thinks she is a boy due to her appearance and the way she dresses).  One by one, the Host Club members finds out the truth about her gender and took a liking to her.  They do not mind her being a host whereas Haruhi herself continues being one because it is the only way she can earn enough money to pay of her debt, so long as the rest of the school do not find out her secret!

Ouran High School Host Club is one of the few anime that could match up to Fumoffu (Full Metal Panic) in terms of comedy and THAT’S an achievement indeed!  The story is simple but very entertaining, revolving around the daily activities of the Host Club and the history of its members.  The animation is done pretty well with attention given to fine details such as the wallpapers and ceiling patterns of the grand school building.  Vibrant and bright colours are used suiting the cheery theme of the story.

In terms of characters, there is a variety in just the Host Club and all have their own quirks.  We have Haruhi, your not so typical heroine who is very straightforward and extremely dense when it comes to realising people’s affection towards her.  We also have Tamaki, the founder of the Host Club who adopts the role of a prince when entertaining guests.  On the other hand we have Kyouya, a cunning but resourceful guy who’s the one really managing the club.  Then we have Mitsukuni the loli-shota host who looks like a child but is in fact a senior in the school and an awesome martial artist.  We also have Takashi, the silent but considered as the wild host who’s a Kendo expert.  Finally, we have the mischievous Hitachiin twins, Kaoru and Hikaru, whose brotherly-love is their main selling point as hosts.

There’s nothing much to compliment about in terms of music.  The opening and ending themes are ok; the same can be said for the background music.  Nevertheless, they do suit the theme of the series well.  I am rather disappointed that Maaya Sakamoto did not contribute to the soundtrack even though she is the seiyu for Haruhi.  I really love what she did for Escaflowne, RahXephon and even Brain Powered.  Overall, Ouran High School Host Club is a must try for anyone, well worth the 26 episodes of high-energy comic relief.
