The story takes place in the year 1920 in the United States of America. Chrno and Rosette are professional exorcists from the 'Order of Magdalene'. They travel between various places, equipped with heavy duty weapons for them to prevent demons from taking possession.

One day, Chrno and Rosette are sent to a very special mission. They met Azmaria Hendric, a young girl with special powers that is somehow connected to Joshua Christopher, Rosette's younger brother. Joshua was kidnapped 4 years ago by Aion, a former ally of Chrno. Then the main plot was revealed. It turns out that Aion wants to 'collect' the 7 Apostles (including Joshua and Azmaria) and use their powers to replace God and rule the world.

On their journey to find and stop Aion, they meet Satella, a jewel summoner. Thinking that Chrno may have been the demon who murdered her parents, Satella approaches them. However, she finds out that Chrno hadn't done anything like that in the past and so, she goes along with them in order to gather information on the demon she's after.

As you watch, you may wonder about the rather typical behavior of the nuns/sisters of the Magdalene Order. They gossip, they lie and even swoon over the cute Chrno. We slowly discover that these young ladies are not "sisters" in the traditional sense. These young women have been chosen because of their abilities to fight evil. Minister Remington is actually a Protestant minister, not a Catholic priest. While the Order may have some of the trappings of the Catholic church, they are more like allies of God. As we learn in one of Azmaria's lessons, the Magdalene Order is made up of members from different religious sects.

Overall, Chrno Crusade is one of the best anime I've seen despite of the 'rushed' ending. Too many important plot points were squeezed into the last episode and leaving many questions unanswered. The best part is of course the music. The background music is really good and supports the action very well, without taking your attention away from the main scene. The opening and closing themes of the anime are also really nice to listen to. The opening song "Tsubasa wa Pleasure Line" is slightly upbeat, while the closing song "Sayonara Solitaire" is a little nostalgic, and they complement each other perfectly.

Characters

Chrno - Chrno was once a high-ranking, powerful demon, but now he's considered a traitor by those of his own kind. He betrayed the demon society to follow Aion's dream of freedom, however, their different ideas soon separated them. He lost his horns, the source of his power, and accidentally killed Magdalene, the woman he loved, by using her lifetime. Chrno was sealed inside Magdalene's tomb for 50 years before meeting Rosette and made a contract with her at her request. Despite the deadly bond that ties the both of them, he deeply cares about her and serves her unconditionally. While he is basically a very peaceful person, he can be very aggressive towards anybody who tries to hurt her.
Chrno is someone who has very little confidence in himself and a very low self-esteem, consequence of the many tragedies he's been through, especially Magdalene's death. He loves others more than he loves himself, and the thought of being the reason Rosette's life is slowly being consumed is a real torture to him.

Rosette Christopher - Rosette is an exorcist of the Magdalan Order, which she joined 4 years ago after losing her younger brother Joshua, her only living relative, who was kidnapped by Aion. She met Chrno by accident when she was 12 years of age, and she befriended him in spite of him being a demon. Rosette and Chrno have a contract, which means that he uses her remaining lifetime as the source of his powers. That contract is symbolized by a small 'clock' that always hangs around her neck, which serves as a seal for Chrno's powers. Rosette's remaining lifetime is very short and she doesn't expect to live past 30, yet she is a strong, optimistic person, and is decided to live her life to the fullest and rescue her brother before she dies. Despite the terrible bond that ties her to Chrno, they are real friends who sincerely trust each other, and their feelings slowly evolve into something much deeper. Rosette is very rebellious and constantly gets into trouble, yet she is valued in the Order as a very capable exorcist. She has a small crush on Remington, is very protective of Azmaria and is terribly jealous of Satella, who constantly teases her with Chrno.

Joshua Christopher - Rosette's younger brother, who is also one of the 7 Apostles. The supernatural powers he had made him a very weak child, who was constantly sick. Tired of being protected by his sister and wanting to be strong so she didn't have to worry about him, he accepted Aion's offer and put Chrno's horns on his head. The overwhelming power of the horns made him lose his sanity almost immediately, and he frequently mixes dreams and reality. He constantly thinks about his dear sister Rosette, almost to the point of being obsessed. He can be very dangerous sometimes, so he is guarded by Fiore, who he sometimes confuses as his sister.

Azmaria Hendric - A 12-year-old soprano who is also one of the 7 Apostles. Azmaria was born in Fatima, Portugal on 12th March 1912, but she went to the U.S. at a very young age after losing both her parents in World War I. She was adopted by Ricardo Hendric, a demon tamer who wanted to use her powers to revive his dead wife, but she was rescued by Rosette and Chrno and was taken in by the Magdalan Order. She is a kind and sweet girl, who looks up to Rosette and wants to be like her. Since the supernatural powers she has have always been a real source of despair for her, and the cause of many tragedies in her life, she has grown to be a very weak, submissive girl, but she is determined to change that and become a brave person like Rosette.

Satella Harvenheit - She's a jewel summoner, who works as an independent demon exterminator. She was born in Germany from a very wealthy family and traveled to the U.S. after losing her parents in the hands of a hornless demon. She is very rich and appears to be a little arrogant, but she is actually a kind and lonely woman searching for her dear older sister Florette, who was kidnapped 10 years ago. Her only companion is her family's old butler, Steiner. She has a strong temper and constantly fights with Rosette, yet they're very good friends at heart. Though Satella would never admit it, she really admires Rosette, and is inspired by her determination and attitude towards life. She is attracted to young boys and finds Chrno to be especially cute. She also enjoys teasing Rosette by flirting with Chrno, who really doesn't like it and desperately avoids her.

Kate Valentine (Sister Kate) - The headmistress of the NY branch of the Magdalan Order. She is a first-class militia and is a rather strong and capable woman, but she frequently loses her patience with Rosette, who is a real source of trouble for her. Despite this, she sincerely cares about her and doesn't stand the idea of Rosette wasting her life because of the contract she made. Sister Kate is very distrustful of Chrno, but she knows how much he cares for Rosette, so she tries to be tolerant with him.

(Minister) Ewan Remington - He's a first-class militia and a very influential member of the Magdalan Order. Remington was the one who took Rosette and Chrno to the Magdalan convent in New York and took the role of their protector, constantly keeping a close eye on them. He likes to flirt and is very popular with all the girls at the Magdalan Order, especially Rosette, who has a small crush on him. He is a powerful fighter, but he is very mysterious and hides many secrets. He seems to have been in love with Magdalene, and still keeps a very strong resentment against the person responsible for her death.

Aion - He's an ambitious, powerful demon that betrayed Pandaemonium, the demon society, to follow his dream of freedom. He was tired of Pandaemonium's oppressive system, so he killed the demon queen, mother of all demons, and being a natural, charismatic leader, he escaped to earth with other demons who also shared his dream of liberty. Aion and Chrno were great friends and even considered themselves as brothers, but Chrno did not agree with some of Aion's ideas and soon left his side to be with Magdalene. Chrno's betrayal hurt Aion very deeply, and though he seems to enjoy making him suffer, he's still ready to accept him as an ally if he ever decides to join his cause again. Aion sincerely cares about his followers and wants the best for them, but he is also willing to sacrifice them if that helps him achieve his ultimate goal: the total destruction of Pandaemonium and the "rebirth" of the world. Aion considers humans as mere tools and doesn't really care about the future of humanity. Despite his great intelligence and resourcefulness, Aion has a weak point: his deep hatred and fear of Pandaemonium, which affects him to the point of becoming a real obsession. He seems to have some hidden feelings for the queen, but that only makes him cruel, even sadistic, towards her.
