Although the intro sequence will make you doubt whether it is an anime or not, Boys Be is a very nice series. Each introspective episode begins and ends with a philosophical quote which loosely sums up the episode's content, and it sets the proper mood. Click here to see the quotes: Boys Be Quotes. The anime, while centered on Kyoichi and Chiharu, actually revolves about all six main characters and their love lives, each one unique and full of character.

Boys Be is a very heart warming series. What sets this apart from other romantic comedies is that it doesn't rely on silly humor for its central appeal, focusing more on the emotional ups and downs and misunderstandings during the awkward adolescent years. That's not to say their isn't some ecchi content, but it is very much in tune with the things young boys will do-looking up skirts, noticing cleavage or finding new attentions in what were once ordinary activities.

The animation is good, although there's not much of real action in stuff like this. The characters and artwork are quite nicely drawn, if a bit inconsistent in some episodes (e.g. once, Chiharu looked rather masculine) ^__^. Many of the things about Boys Be make it worth watching, especially the witty dialogue, memorable characters and lighthearted, heartwarming story. Every character, from the funny pervert Makoto to the impatient Aki, is distinct and is full of personality brought out by the great dialogue.

If there's one weakness about the series it would have to be its length. Boys Be is only thirteen episodes long, and it leaves some plot holes. Enjoy the ride while it lasts because this one's bound to leave you hankering for your adolescent memories.

Characters

Kyoichi Kanzaki - Kyoichi is a very kind-hearted, loving and caring person & although his greatest weakness is not being able to express how he really feels, deep inside he is very thoughtful and passionate. His lack of expression and obscurity is mostly only due to his fears of getting hurt. But even if this is so, he never fails to act sensitively and maturely in all situations. Kyoichi currently resides in Tokyo with his parents and elder sister, Sayaka. He is romantically involved with Chiharu and Sayama.

Chiharu Nitta - Chiharu is a very ambitious and driven person. She never lets anyone get in the way of her success. She's very determined and willful, causing her to always put everything and everyone behind her work in terms of priority. She takes pride in being a good track-and- fielder but in the process, always seem to almost never have fun or take a break. Her feelings are sometimes a blur causing her to cross the thin line between right and wrong. Running is her life, and for her, it's all or nothing. Makoto always calls her 'barbarian' because of her tomboy like personality. Chiharu is romantically involved Kyoichi.

Makoto Kurumizawa - Makoto is a girl-crazy, goofy, fun-loving guy who prides himself in knowing a lot about women and even has a complete record of each and every girl's information in their high school stored in his laptop. But in truth, Makoto doesn't really have much experience with girls and tries to make up for it by reading all kinds of love books and watching all sorts of movies. Well, needless to say, he's somewhat of a pervert but it is only out of desperation of not having a proper romantic relationship. He's very much obsessed with having the 'perfect girlfriend' but cannot seem to find one who suits him best. Makoto lives with his Mother and works in a coffee shop (which looks more like a fast food burger joint) which they own. He is also very interested with computers and the latest in technological breakthroughs. Makoto is in love with Yumi.

Yumi Kazama - Yumi is very unique and outspoken. She constantly seems to be driven to weird and unusual things. Even her sense of fashion is painted with a shade of the extraordinary. She is also very strict and conservative and doesn't take well to errors or bad manners. But underneath it all, Yumi is a very sensitive person who's only wish is to find someone who will understand her and love her for what and who she really is. Under her kindness, she is very lucid and doesn't accept people taking her for an idiot. She is romantically involves with Makoto.

Yoshihiko Kenjo - Yoshihiko is the athletic and popular guy of the group. Although he is undoubtedly the best baseball player in the entire school, he prefers only joining in baseball practices rather than participating in the actual tournaments because he feels that he can never devote himself to only one thing. He almost always puts on a 'tough' facade which renders him as kind of insensitive and unromantic. But in reality, he is a nice and dependable person who just has trouble understanding others' feelings as well as his own. Kenjo is the sort of guy who is good at everything he does because once he becomes interested in something, he puts his mind, body, soul and heart in it. Plus he is a born-natural when it comes to sports. Kenjo is in love with a junior, Horikawa.

Aki Mizutani - Lively and energetic, Aki can be simply defined as the 'girl-version-Makoto' (but less perverted) of the group. She is very goofy and funny most of the time too, and loves to have fun, go on adventures and partying. She is also somewhat hung-up on guys, although her heart only belongs to one, Ueno. A typical girl-next-door kind of girl, she is very passionate, and when she loves someone, she sticks with him to the end. She is considered to be the prettiest and most popular among her group of friends.
