Blood+ starts off with the introduction of Saya Otonashi, an anaemic and amnesiac living happily with her adoptive family of George (father) and Kai and Riku (her brothers who are also adopted by George). As a usual anime goes, her happy life is then shattered when she was attacked by a creature known to be of the chiropteran species. A mysterious then man appears and hands Saya a katana, claiming that she has to fight. Finding her incapable of doing so, he forced Saya to consume his blood. This did the trick as it transformed Saya into another person; an expressionless fighting machine. She totally trashed the creature attacking her and once things settled down, it was revealed that the man is Saya’s chevalier called Haji, loyal in protecting her. Not long after, Saya finds herself involved in a war that has been raging for centuries between Chiropterans and a group that opposes the creatures, the Red Shield. Unknown to her is that the war is centred around her mysterious past. Thus, she embarks on the journey to recover her lost memories of her dark past.

Personally, I think anime series with more than 13 episodes in a season is overkill. The most I could accept before I totally lose my interest in a series is 26 episodes. However, I find myself hooked to most of the 50 episodes of Blood+, although there are times I felt as though the plot is too linear and predictable. Nevertheless, the story is deep and involving, rarely wasting any screen time whatsoever. The pacing is commendable, keeping the story interesting with lots of action sequences while slowing down to insert the all important character developments. With 50 episodes, the characters can be fleshed out effectively, allowing the viewers to bond with them as well as grief when the time comes for some to snuff it (Yup, certain characters die but not to worry as there are many good characters for you to continue routing for).

The soundtrack is also good with the background songs fitting the mood of the scenes well. The first opening theme, Aozora no Namida by Hitomi Takahashi, fits the story really well too while the third ending theme, This Love by Angela Aki, has entered my all time favourites list. The dark colour palettes used in the anime is also another reason why I loved this anime. Overall, Blood+ is definitely a must watch for any anime otaku!
