Samuel Matete became the first Zambian to win a silver medal at the Olympics when he finished second in the 400-metre hurdles at the 1996 Games in Atlanta. Matete is also the first and only Zambian to win a world championship in any sporting event. He won the 400-metre hurdles world championship in 1991.
