SIMON ZUKAS

BUSINESSMAN
Former Minister of Works and Supply Simon Zukas, is a European immigrant who became a political activist after he was unhappy the colonial rulers' mistreatment of the natives. He came to Zambia from Lithuania as a youth in the 1930s with his parents. He later joined the King African Rifles. In the 40s, his radical and even communist ideas made him friends with trade unionists and nationalists but extremely unpopular with the government. He was deported to England in 1952 but kept in touch with the nationalists. At the dawn of independence, he was welcomed back as a hero. Owner and operator of several businesses and farming ventures, Zukas was made Minister of Agriculture and later Minister of Works and Supply in President Frederick Chiluba's government. He resigned from the Cabinet in 1996 because he was not happy the changes in the constitution that defined a Zambians as someone born to two Zambian parents. He remains active in the business sector.
