    BUSINESSMAN, POLITICIAN


    Vernon Johnson Mwaanga, a Zambian diplomat and businessman, was born in 1939. He was educated at Hodgson College in Lusaka, Stanford University in USA and Oxford University in United Kingdom. He served as Deputy High Commissioner to U.K. 1964-65; Ambassador to U.S.S.R 1965-68; Permanent Representative to UN 1968-72; Editor-in-Chief of Times of Zambia 1972-73; Minister of Foreign Affairs 1973-75.

    He was detained in 1985 on charges of drug trafficking. He ran several businesses until 1991 when he returned to government as Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1991. Although he was removed from Cabinet, he still hold key positions in the ruling and is part of the inner circle of President Chiluba. He has written several books including his autobiography.
