HUMPREY MULEMBA
SECRETARY GENERAL 1981 - 1985
Humprey Mulemba, Zambia's Secretary-General from 1981 to 1985, was born
in September 1932 in Lusaka and went to school at St. Canisius College. He
worked in the mines in Chingola until he went into the labour movement, rising
to the full-time secretary of the General Workers' Union.
In 1959, he was detained for
his political activities and released a year later.
He was elected to Parliament in 1964 and was appointed deputy speaker,
serving until 1967 when he was appointed a deputy minister. He became a full
Cabinet minister in 1968 as Minister of Luapula Province.
He later served as Minister of Trade and Industry, Minister of Mines before
he was appointed Secretary-General, the number two position, on February 18,
1981. He held the position until April 24, 1985 when he was replaced by Grey
Zulu. Mulemba was sent into diplomatic service. He later became a member of the
opposition party.
Mulemba died in 1998.
