| COUP IN ZAMBIANEWS FLASH TUESDAY OCTOBER 28:Zambian President Frederick Chiluba, seen here with journalist Maidstone Mulenga, has been reportedly toppled in a military coup. A Zambian military officer who identified himself as Captain Solo, said in a brief message on government-run radio that he was acting out of discontent with the government of Chiluba, who has ruled this southern African nation since 1991. Solo, whose message also was broadcast on an independent radio station, said a full announcement would be made later. The claim could not be confirmed immediately. Witnesses said Lusaka, the capital, was calm and there was no sound of gunfire or other disturbances. State radio asked citizens to remain in their homes. A South African radio station, quoting an unidentified source, reported a heavy military presence in the streets of Lusaka, with tanks moving toward the city. Capt. Solo, of the previously unknown National Redemption Council, said Chiluba had been ousted in a campaign called Operation Born Again. I saw an angel and the message was the government had to be overthrown, Solo said in the radio broadcast. If true, the coup would be a severe setback to hopes for political stability in southern Africa, bolstered in recent years by the end of apartheid in South Africa and Chilubas successive election victories after decades of single-party rule in Zambia.
