The Great Disaster (Jessica)

Thousands of years ago, an intelligent race thrived on a not so far-away planet. But they would not thrive for much longer. A world wide apocalypse was in the making. Only a small handful of these beings knew this, however. Something had to be done. Their species had been slowly destroying their world for millennia, and it was all about to come to a head. Soon the protective outer layer of the atmosphere would disappear, letting the suns rays through in full force, leaving all the harmful components completely unfiltered. These few people knew what horrors this would do to life as they knew it, what mutations would occur, how many would die from exposure. The scientists who discovered this told only the highest powers on the entire planet. No information concerning this horrendous discovery was revealed to the general population of the world. After several years of debates, arguments, rejected plans and failed experiments, a decision was finally reached. Spaceships were built to carry the population to a new world, where they would take over and re-build their culture. But the disaster came early. Months before the predicted time that the ozone would almost completely dissipate, it happened. The radiation sky-rocketed, and it became fatal to be in the sunlight. Panic set in, people madly rushing for the ships, which were not yet fully stocked for the journey. People became jammed in their stampede and many ended up in the direct sunlight. Thousands were killed in a slow, painful, and terrifying manner, only adding to the hysteria. Those in charge panicked as well, ordering lift-off before the ships were full to even half their maximum capacity, leaving behind a great amount of the worlds population.

The trip was long and hard. There were not enough provisions for the small amount of passengers on board, and many more died along the way. The sick and the elderly died first, because there was not much in the way of medical supplies on board any of the ships. The very young were next because of the filthy conditions. Hygiene and general quality of living declined steadily, until a small group of dirty, under-nourished and unhealthy beings stumbled off the dilapidated ships onto the firm ground of their new world many years later. Life was tough for them, but not nearly as much so as for those who were left behind.

Life was a nightmare for a long time for them. It took many long years, with the air growing worse all the time, for them to build a huge underground network with relatively non-toxic air. By the time that was finished, the population was even more meager than that of those who escaped. Mutation had already begun, and continued slowly for thousands of years, until these people were unrecognizable as being related to those who made it to the new world.

Meanwhile, the new world people survived and expanded quite well, and completely forgot about their origins. The people of the old world did not. It was passed down from generation to generation, This is what the Traitors did to us. They left us here to die. They kept it a secret for too long. Then it was too late, and we were abandoned here to suffer and die.

And so the hate grew and grew, for all those thousands of years, while the objects of this hatred had forgot what they had done. Gradually, the people of the old world adapted to the climate, although now their physiology was nothing like what it once had been. And their society evolved, until space travel was possible for them once more. For they had had to concentrate solely on their survival for so many generations, that most of their previous technology was lost. One thing remained, however. Some of the people left behind were part of the team that discovered the impending doom and helped pick the new world. They knew where the ships were headed, and this too was passed down for all those centuries. The whole population of the old world had two common goals. The first was to survive, and the second was to find the Traitors who had left them there to rot and make them pay. To make the Traitors suffer as they had been made to suffer. Once they had achieved their goal of survival, the whole planet concentrated solely on amassing a force to conquer the Traitors, which was not hard, as everyone wanted to contribute.

They built a huge fleet of warships, fast and heavily-armed. They also sent out smaller scouting ships, which spied on the new world, assessing their defenses. Small teams were sent out and infiltrated the population, using extensive disguises. The people of the old world had revenge bred into their nature for so long that they had progressed much faster than the Traitors had. They were now far more technologically advanced, and they knew it. They used this advantage everywhere they could, and after the final preparations were made, they were ready to take over the planet of the Traitors. They left their world without looking back, never to return to Earth.
