| Fall is my favorite time of year! Here in Texas we don't get those great fall seasons like in my native Midwest. But I cherish every "fall like" day. I like to think that every home in America is doing a little fall cleaning in preparation for the change of the season! For now is the time to gather up all the summer furniture and plastic pools and all other summer equipment to be stored away until school is out again in the spring. Fathers are asked to drag out from the garage or attic those dusty tubs packed with children's fall and winter attire. Mothers sort, wash, and hang the clothes and then refill the containers with spring and summer outfits. On goes the denim jacket to rake up all the crunchy colorful leaves that blanket the yard. Porches are swept, windows are washed, and cobwebs are cleared to make room for the pumpkins and jack o lanterns and scarecrows! Up with the indian corn and wreaths! The decorations (minus any obvious halloween stuff) is up until Thanksgiving is over. Wood is bought and stacked and the marshmellow and hot dog sticks stand ready. Cinnamon and apple and pumpkin spice fill each kitchen as Mama makes stew, cornbread, soup, chili, and homemade comfort! A puzzle is completed in front of a crackling fire while sipping hot cider. Nighttime brings baths and flannel pajama babies are tucked into flannel sheets, quilts, and electric blankets. I used to just love coming home after dark on the 31st and watching all the ghost and gobblins trick or treating from house to house while Mom and Dad, flashlight in hand, lit the way. |
