Intercooled CA18ET Engine
Above is a picture of a Renault intercooler on my CA18ET. The unit is very similar in appearance to the one available through Norris Industires. The tubing was custom made, including all the elbows. It has allowd me to turn the boost up to a phenominal 15psi from the stock 5.5. The power is unbelievable. I can easily spin the 205's in second gear for quite a distance! I would estimate the horsepower to be close to 170 or more! All from a 1.8 liter engine! Durability has yet to be seen, as I was running 12psi before. The engine and drive-train seems capable of handling all this extra power. In Japan, they offered this car with a 190 hp engine with the same drive-train.
Here is another shot of the intercooler from a different angle. It is supported to the bay by the metal bar just in front of the air filter. For short bursts of speed, this unit is perfect. For long runs, however, this unit may prove too small to handle prolonged high boost. I haven't experienced any detonation yet, but it can creep up on you unexpectedly.
That tube in the air dam gap supplies cool ambient air to the intercooler. It makes a big difference in the efficiency of the core temperature. I routed it underneath the front fender and up behind the headlight. Believe it or not, there IS enough room to do this!
