| The M4 is the fixed loop carbine version of the M16A2 assault rifle. The history of the M4 in Israel can be traced back to the early 1990's when few Israeli Defense Force (IDF) elite units such as Sayeret Shaldag, Sayeret MATKAL and others began replacing their CAR15 uppers, which had old 1:12 twist barrels (firing the M193 round), with new uppers having 1:7 twist (firing the SS109/M855 round). However these new uppers were still in A1 configuration expect for the new barrels. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
| In the late 1990's the Israeli civilian Special Forces (SF) began buying few M4 for units who needed extended range then that provided by Colt Commando used then. At the same time the IDF also both few M4, however, in order to save money most of the IDF M4 were not bought as complete weapons. Instead, the IDF bought only the M4 uppers and placed them on CAR15 lowers. Moreover, most IDF M4 buying deals weren't officially generated by the IDF but were local enterprises of the units who bought them out of their own budgets. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
| In 2000 the IDF began mass procurement of the M4A1 - the flattop carbine version of the M16A2, and IDF M4 procurement came to stop. Unlike the M4 which was used in small numbers elusively by SF units, the M4A1 is going to be the new IDF standard issue weapon for all infantry oriented units, including both SF and conventional units, replacing the CAR15 in this role. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
| Today, civilian SF units still have small amounts of M4 used. The IDF also has limited usage of the M4, but he weapon likely to be replaced with the superior M4A1 in time. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
