Footpaths in Bangalore - Give Me My Way

Mahesh

4th May 2006

I am following the series of write-up about the status of the footpaths in Bangalore that is published in the Deccan Herald from the 23 April 2006 under the section “Give Me My Way”…

One of the suggestions mentioned include that the footpaths must have a step on the curb to ensure that motorcyclists do not drive on the footpath but this is going to prevent and create hardships for citizens like me who use crutches to walk.

With this mail I would like to influence the views and opinion of the citizens and the authorities to kindly ensure that the footpaths are also made accessible to persons with disabilities – especially people who use crutches, wheelchairs and also the elderly, pregnant women and children who find it difficult to climb steps.

In my opinion – “Persons with disabilities should be able to use the footpaths like everyone else, do not lock them indoors or blame them as a traffic hazard if they walk on the road…”

Please find below some suggestions of making our footpaths accessible by all which includes persons with disabilities.

The following are some of the suggestions of making our footpaths accessible by all which includes persons with disabilities.

The floor surfaces of the footpaths and curb ramps should be stable, firm and slip-resistant.

Curb Ramps like the one shown below must be provided at ‘Zebra’ crossing or at intersections or bus-stops.

The gradient of the curb ramp should be 1:12.

The picture below shows a dropper Curb for the footpath.
