Magüi Serna confirms her maturity as tennis player against the Austrian Patricia Wartusch

The Canarian tennis player Magüi Serna certifies her condition of candidate to fight for the final win at the Spanish Open after defeating the Patricia Wartusch (6-2 and 6-2), with a solid game and a notable balance in her tennis during the whole match.

"I'm playing very well and I have noticed that I feel more mature on court. That's what the experience gives to you. I make aware much better, I face the matches with a good predisposition and I know how to play according to the score. Now I don't put so much pressure on me ", said the player from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Serna, who assumed her condition of favourite in Madrid, in spite of the 'big competitors that there are', tries to be ready for the second big tournament of the season: Roland Garros.

"In Paris I prefer going step by step and thinking little by little. It has been a shame for me not to be seeded just by some points. But I'm in a good moment and I hope that my good game continues there", said Magüi, whose dream is winning "Wimbledon one day".

The island player recognises that the women's tennis is conditioned by the supremacy of the Williams sisters although she hopes that the characteristics of the tournament in Paris favour a balance and a competitiviness that help this sport.

"The women's tenis is going as expected and is also leveling in general. The Belgians Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin-Hardenne or the French Amelie Mauresmo are getting closer to the Williams sisters. And that's good. Anyone can win", said Serna, who stood out the growth of the Spanish tennis during the last season."

"I think that the Spanish tennis players are doing well and after some 'emptiness' the work we are doing is fruitful", concluded the Canarian, who in the second round at the Spanish Open will play María Antonia Sánchez Lorenzo.

MAGÜI SERNA: "NOW I'M A BETTER PLAYER"

The Canarian Magüi Serna, in spite of her defeat in the second round at the Open de España Madrid 2012, is having one of her best moments in her sports career, which has allowed her to win two titles this season in Estoril and Budapest, something that she says has to do with the "maturity" that she shows at these moments on the court and which lets her be "better player".

"The maturity has been one of the factors that has allowed me to get good results. At this moment, if I make a mistake, I know I have to think of the next point, and this way till the end. That affects my game. I play better with my backhand, I dare trying more things. I'm a better player now", she has said.

"Earlier, when things didn't go well, I used to get muddled and maybe used to fight a lot with myself on the courts, and maybe I didn't follow the scoreline so much. I have improved in a mental level , because I accept that we are humans and we can make mistakes once in a while", she has added.

Serna has recognised that in 2003 she's living her best moments as tennis player. "This is being my best season and I hope this continues this way. The most important thing is that I'm very calm on court. I'm very happy with the way things are going and with the clay season I started in Estoril".

"Also in my professional years my biggest problem has been not to be regular and for the moment in the last two months this has changed", she has said. The Canarian made fun of her preference for grass instead of clay, where she has got her most important successes.

"Maybe I has to change my mind because I have got my three titles on clay", and she has added: "I don't dislike playing on clay, I like it, by any player as kid dreams of winning a big title, and my dream is winning Wimbledon, but Paris wouldn't be bad ".

Next Magüi's goal will be Roland Garros that starts on Monday. "I have my options if I play the way I'm playing. Later you maybe draw one of the 'big' players, for example, the Williams sisters, which would be bad luck, but I prefer going match by match and we'll see".

"I can't know my goals till the draw is released", she has said. About her forecast for the French tournament, Serna in spite of recognising that the Williams sisters are favourite, said the differences are fewer, so she doesn't rule out a surprise.

"On clay they are more accessible and everything is leveling as it happens in the men's draw, and today a top 10 can lose to the number 60 or 70 and that was difficult to see earlier".

Finally, Serna has a very ambitious goal for this season. "I'd like to be top 20, so I would improve my best ranking, which was number 21. When the clay season started, my goal was to be seeded in Paris, and I was only two points away from it", she has concluded.
