Serna Seals Spanish Victory Over Australia

Spain sealed a place in the quarterfinals of this year's Fed Cup World Group competition on Sunday, taking an unassailable 3-1 lead over Australia in their first round tie in Tarragona. Australia then won the doubles to reduce the final deficit to 3-2.

Magüi Serna sealed victory for Spain under azure skies at the picturesque Spanish coastal resort, beating Alicia Molik 64 61 to end Australia's challenge.

"It's very satisfying to play the decisive point in the decisive match, especially when you are playing at home. It's an unbelievably good feeling," said Serna. "I think I played one of my best matches of the year so far."

Earlier in the day Conchita Martínez set Spain on the road to victory by dishing out a lesson in clay court tennis to Nicole Pratt. “It really helped that Conchita played so well," said Serna. "That took a lot of the pressure off me."

Serna followed Martínez' win with a virtuoso performance of her own, proving why she has won two clay court titles in a row in Estoril and Budapest, where she beat Molik in the final.

On that occasion Molik pushed Serna to three sets but that never looked likely today, with Serna stepping up her level of play and Molik appearing nervous and out of sorts.

"This is my favourite win of the last twelve wins. I love playing the Fed Cup. I love playing for my country. And this was one of the best matches I have played so far. I'm very happy. It was very important for me."

The Australian surrendered her serve twice to go 1-5 down in the first set and though she fought back gamely to give the scoreline some respectability, she never really recovered from the poor start. Serna romped through the second set as Molik got ever more frustrated.

Serna Says Team Work Could Be Secret Against France

Magüi Serna, who proved to be the lynchpin of Spain's first round Fed Cup win over Australia, believes that the team spirit in the Spanish squad could be the secret of their success.

Serna, who sealed Spain's place in the quarterfinals by winning both her singles matches in Tarragona, said the squad was just like a family.

"The Spanish team is always very friendly and we always have so much fun, not only amongst the players but everybody who is in the team," said Serna. "I think that is one of the best things about the Spanish team. Everybody is like a big family."

After a relatively comfortable won over Australia, the Spaniards will need every ounce of that team spirit for their quarterfinal tie, a potentially tricky home match-up against France.

Serna, who improved her Fed Cup record to ten singles wins and eight losses with her performance in Tarragona against the Australians, agreed that Mauresmo and Dechy were difficult prospects. "Mauresmo and Dechy are both playing great but it's not until July so we still have some months to go," said Serna. "It's going to be tough but good to watch I think."

Magüi Serna recognised that «at the beginning I was a little bit nervous, but llittle by little I have felt very good on the court and I have developed my game». About her great moment, Magüi Serna said that «I have being playing two weeks at a great level and I hope that this goes on. I feel very good and I hope that I can help Spain to win this tie».

The Canarian thinks that «we have lots of chances to reach the quarters, although the tie will be close till the end. Even the doubles match could be decisive ». Serna can be key for this tie.
