Magüi, surprised about her maturity

A week after defending successfully her title in Estoril, the Canarian Magüi Serna has kept the regularity and has won the Budapest tournament, to become the fourth player that wins two tournaments this season. Yesterday she was in Barcelona, preparing the Fed Cup.

“For me it has been a surprise to win again in Estoril”, confessed Magüi, “because it's always tough to face a situation like that, with so much tension, everyone paying attention to you, Later, it has been easier in Budapest, where I have played with an incredible calmness, which has even surprised myself”, she said.

“Maybe it's because I have got that calmness that I didn't have, now I play easier, without forcing, playing more with my backhand and knowing what I have to do in every moment”, added the Canarian player.

The Belgian Kim Clijsters, winner in Sydney and Indian Wells, the Russian Anastasia Myskina, winner in Doha and Sarasota, and the Belgian Justine Henin-Hardene, in Dubai and Charleston, are the other players that have won two titles this season.

Coached by her countryman Fernando García Lleó, Magüi Serna,  24 years old, has become the Spanish player with best results since Arantxa Sánchez Vicario decided to retire, last year. She has played six finals in her career, in fact, her last two titles are the only titles won by a Spanish player this season.

Winner in 10 consecutive matches, Magüi has only lost two sets in these two weeks, one of them in the Budapest final, where she defeated the number two of the Australian Fed Cup team, Alicia Molik, against whom she'll play this weekend at the CT Tarragona in the first tie of the World Group.

Magüi Serna faces this tie with excitement, where she'll play with Conchita Martínez, Virginia Ruano and Anabel Medina, and it seems she'll only play the singles matches.

These two countries have played each other eight times in the Fed Cup, with six wins for Spain.

“I wish the crow supports us because it's a problem that the Godó Open is being played at the same time in Barcelona and Barcelona is so close”, said Serna.

PARIS, THE DREAM. Magüi hopes to be a seed at Roland Garros and the points got in the last two weeks can help for that. In fact she'll be top 40 and with many chances because she defends few points.

“After the Fed Cup I'll play in Warsaw, Berlin, Rome and Madrid and I'll be close to get it”, added the Canarian, who in 1998 reached the fourth round in Paris, although her best result in a Grand Slam was in 2000 at Wimbledon, when she was quarterfinalist.

Everything seems to go well for the Canarian and the injuries respect her, although in Budapest her right quadriceps was a little bit hurt. “It's not important and I have enough time to rest, but it's true that I am a little bit tired after having played so many matches in the last two weeks, but the fact of winning two titles makes me forget the tiredness. I have much more confidence ”, said Serna.
