EASTBOURNE 2001

Magüi had a great performance at Eastbourne 2001, reaching the final after defeating some tough rivals. In the final she found a too strong rival, Lindsay Davenport, and she could do nothing against her.

Words after her semifinals match against the Russian Elena Likhovtseva.

"That's nearly two years ago and tomorrow we might find that a lot has changed."

"I watched Lindsay's match against Rubin and she is obviously back in great form. She loves playing on the grass, but then again so do I. “

"I know it might sound strange coming from a Spanish player but grass is my favourite surface. “

"It is all clay in Spain, but I guess I'm a bit strange because I even like the hardcourt surface better than clay."

"I always feel comfortable when I play in England. And the more I play on grass the better I'm getting."

"I owe a lot to my coach Stefan Ortega and the tactics he gave me."

"I had to go for all my serves because Elena can return the ball so hard and that's probably why I made so many doubles. She played good as well and so I am delighted to have won even though I couldn't believe how many chances I wasted at the end."

    Words after playing the final.

“Lindsay played so well today there was nothing I could do,"

"She is just so solid from everywhere on the court. For me, she is the favorite going into Wimbledon, because when she plays like this, there aren't too many girls that can play with her."

"I didn't play that well. I was a bit tired from yesterday (Friday) when I had a really long match."

"I am happy with the week and looking forward to Wimbledon.”

"I would like to do as well as last year and if I can get past the quarter-finals that would be even better."

"She has a good serve, she is really tall and has long arms and it is really difficult to move her."
