“ I feel
very happy, not only because of the win, but also because of the
way I’m playing.
Now, I have to concentrate a lot and
see what happens in the next match, which will probably be
against the South African Amanda Coetzer (13)”

Serna was the heroine of the day after defeating Coetzer
The Canarian Magüi Serna was yesterday the responsible of the first surprise of the fifth day in the US Open after defeating the South African Amanda Coetzer, 13th-seeded, by 7-5 and 7-6 (7-3).
Serna’s win was the fourth consecutive win for the Spanish tennis in the fifth day, with Arantxa Sánchez Vicario qualified for the fourth round, and Álex Corretja (8) and Carlos Moyá reached the third round and will face tomorrow.
Serna, 31st of the world, will have as rival in the fourth round the winner of the match that the Americans Venus Williams, third-seeded, and the American Meghann Shaughnessy were playing on the Centre Court Arthur Ashe.
Magüi’s win was the first she got against Coetzer after having lost the five previous matches.
Serna was always in the match with great hits from the baseline, which were decisive in the key moments to break Coetzer’s serve.
“After winning the first set I knew I had my chances to win because I was playing better and had a big concentration in everything I was doing”, said Serna, who reached the fourth round of the US Open for the second time in her four performances there.
The Canarian tennis player showed her maturity in the tie-break, when she used her serve to lead by 5-1, which was decisive.
“I didn’t lose my concentration and it helped me in order not to have problems when I was leading 5-1 to win the match in the first match point”, said Serna.
The Spanish player admited that the next match, if it’s against the eldest Williams sister, won’t be easy at all because she would face a player who is considered one of the favourites to win the tournament.
“My goal,
if I play Williams, is to fight as much as possible and see what
happens”, Serna said. “I’ll leave without a
defined strategy, but mentalised to do the best I can in the
match.
After losing to the American Venus Williams by 2-6 and 2-6 in the fourth round.

Serna recognised that when you face the American “the court is smaller”.
Serna described her rival’s game, third-seeded and one of
the main favourites to win the title: “She’s very fast,
she hits incredible strokes, she gives a step and is already in
the net. To top it all, her second serve is almost like the
first serve of many people”. Because of these things, the
Spaniard couldn’t do anything.
