Serna: “In spite of winning, I’m not happy”
Magüi Serna was one
of the Spanish winners with her win against Bobkova: “In the beginning,
I did nothing with my drive, and that got me nervous. Despite having won,
I’m not happy, because I know how well I was playing last week. My serve
has saved me many times today, but I have complicated the match myself
because I was too confident. Against Rita Grande (next rival) I think I’ll
play better. She goes more often to the net, and that’s better for me.

- Well, I don’t know. I left happy because I won, but I’m not happy with the way I’ve played today, because, well, the two last weeks I’ve played much better, and I hope to play tomorrow as well as I was playing last week.
Words after defeating the Japanese Sawamatsu in the third round in Wimbledon, in 1998, by 6-3, 5-7 and 6-0.

Magüi Serna:
I can surprise
Davenport
Magüi Serna was very satisfied with her performance against the Japanese Sawamatsu. Despite losing the second set when she had almost the win, a clear 6-0 in the last set made her be happy: “I’ve played a good match. The first set went very well, and I lost the second one because of a distraction. Fortunately, I got an early break in the third set and that has made me be more relaxed”.
Now, the Spanish player
has got a difficult way: she must play to Lindsay Davenport, second-seeded,
and if she wins and the pronostics aren’t wrong, she would face Conchita
Martínez. Magüi only thinks of the first match: “It’ll be a
tough match. She’s world number two, but I feel very good and my game might
hurt her. She’ll be the favourite, but I think I have my choices of surprising
her”.
Words before the match against the American Lindsay Davenport, in Wimbledon, in 1998.
(Translation from DIARIO AS (Monday, 29th June 1998))
“This is the tournament that consecrates
a player”. Without any doubt, that’s her goal in the 1/8 finals. Magüi’s
rival is Davenport, from the USA, although she’s optimistic: “I have more
choices on grass. The key, my first serve”.
