OPEN VILLA DE MADRID 1998

( Translation from Diario  AS (Thursday, 21th May 1998 ))

Magüi Serna
“I’ve come here to win the tournament”

Among the Spaniards, Magüi Serna was the only one who could reach the quarterfinals. She played much better than her countrywomen, although she had it much easier than the rest of them. Her rival, the Italian Laura Golarsa, didn’t   put her into any trouble “I have played at a great level. Against the Japanese Yoshida, in the first round, I did also a good match, but today-yesterday-my game has been of better quality. I’m very happy because I have played so well before the Spanish crowd. Now, I just have to keep the rhythm till the end of the week”

The Swiss Patty Schnyder will be her rival today in the quarterfinals. However, Magüi doesn’t ‘shrink’: “The match against Patty is going to be very tough and pretty, but I have lot of confidence in my possibilities. I always go to the tournaments with a winning mentality, especially if they’re played in Spain. I’ve come to the Villa de Madrid to try to win it” Regarding the other favourite players to win the Open Villa de Madrid, María Luisa Serna didn’t want to choose one, although she recognised that “Van Roost is playing very well. She might be one of the players to beat”

Her next challenge is Roland Garros, where she has many hopes and she doesn’t rule out to give a surprise: “Everything will depend on the draw. If it’s favourable for me, I can go far, because I’m playing very well and with a lot of confidence”
