If you have read my story My writings, you would have known that I am quite music oriented. When I was 5, one day, my Mom suddenly asked me if I wanted to learn violin. I said yes though I had no idea what violin looked like. She brought me to a violin teacher that she knew, he looked at my fingers and told my mom that my fingers were long and I was potential to learn violin. From then on, I started to have violin class every week, practised at least an hour everyday. I played fairly well. I went on stage to play alone or with my group a couple times every year. I passed the 5th level out of 8 of the violin standard exam when I was 12. If I kept learning 3 more years, I could be able to pass the 8th level, then I could be a professional violin player. However, after almost 8 years violin life, I didn't like it as much as before. I quit it when I was 13. I know my family wanted me to continue, they had spent so much money and time for me. I felt bad too, I wanted to be successful at violin, but since it was getting harder and harder, that made me feel more and more frustrated. At that time, I really wanted to get rid of violin and had fun with my friends. .... I had not really touched my violin until I was 18. I suddenly wanted to play it. I was quite upset that I wasn't good anymore. When I am getting older, I really don't have enough time for my little instrument. I felt lucky that I started to learn violin when I was young, and I felt sad that I quitted when I was still young. On this christmas eve (2002), I saw a movie called "The red violin" on TV, it was a pretty good movie, it brought back my memory of violins when I was a kid. Though I wasn't like the child in the movie that he had to sleep with his beloved violin everynight, my violin was once my dear treasure. I was very proud to play violin for my family, friends and my parents' friends. ... (I will record some songs and post them here once I bring my violin back from my parents' house) I wrote my first song "I wanna be myself" when I was 16. I had a lot of pieces of music in my mind before this song, but more or less, they were classical music. "I wanna be myself" is a rock song. I composed all the songs on my head, then wrote down the notes on the paper. I know a lot of people they write songs with guitar or piano, mine is just straight from my head. Melody is easy to come to my mind. However, I have problem writing lyrics. This is also different from other songwriters, since most of them would write lyrics first then make up a song. So I guess I am just purely music-talented, not words-talented. Since I know violin, it helps me a lot to learn other music intruments easier, because I am good at telling notes (play by ear). I know guitar and harmonica too. I just know how to play them, but I can't play them well since I never go to any class. Having a band is always my dream. But I guess I don't know enough people who play music (especially drummers), so it still hasn't come true. :( I would really like to be a song-writer and vocal. I can try to play guitar only if there is a solo part. (I can't play chords too well, my palm is small.) I can sing, I can sing while playing the guitar too. I remembered once I was listening to "bizarred love triangle" by Frente on my CD player loudly in my room, my mom knocked on the door and asked me not to sing that loud. :) "I wanna be myself" was written in 1997 Feb.
