Computer laboratory house rules

1. Only authorized personnel and computer students during their respective class hours are allowed inside the computer laboratory.

2. Absolutely no eating, drinking, and smoking inside the computer laboratory.

3. Things (bags, books, etc.) must be placed in front, beside the professors table. Only pencils and notebooks are allowed to be used during computer class.

4. Data should be saved in Drive I (users account)

5. Students must not use / open any software other than the one authorized by the computer instructors and only for requirements related to the computer class.

6. Printers may be used as specified by the technician or computer instructors and only for the requirement of the computer class.

7. Students are not allowed to use the computers outside their respective class hours.

8. Anyone who utilizes the computer laboratory will be charged for any damage he/she may cause on any of the facilities. An intermittent problem.s or a suspected virus should be be reported to the technician or instructor immediately.

9. Students are not allowed to power-off their computers.

10. violators of the foregoing rules will be meted out the corresponding adminitrative/disciplinary action.

Basic Components of a Computer System

1. user

2. hardware - the physical computer and its componeents.

3. software - programs that run in the computer. A sequence of instructions that can be executed by the computer, designed to perform a particular task.

There are two types of software:

Operating system (OS)- control the operations of the computer.

- coordinates and manipulates computer hardware, such as memory, printer, disks, keyboard, mouse and monitor.

- organizes files on the storage media

- manages hardware errors and loss of data.

Applications - programs designed to help people perform a certain type of work. Transforms raw data into meaningful information to satisfy a users need.

Two type of applications:

Packaged - designed for a wide range of users

Custom - designed for a specific user's need

Application packages are genarally classified into 4.

1. word processing - applications which are used for manipulating text-based documents

2. electronic spreadsheets -application commonly used for budgets, forecasting, what-if evaluations, analysis, planning, etc.

3. Database management systems - Creates database files; Enable databased files to be displayed, edited and updated; Enable users to inquire about data in the files and to obtain statistics and other summary data.

4. communication tools - applications that enable users to electronically send and retrieve data and messages.
