Kyna's Story

"Her name is Kyna." Headwoman Media explained to Magika. "She comes from Adani Hold. Her parents didn't really know what to do with her.

Seven year old Kyna hated it when adults talked about her like that, like she was a problem. She sighed and threw herself on the floor.

"How did it happen?" Magika asked Media.

"A sickness. Adani's just a small hold, they didn't have a healer. Her parents thought it was nothing, until it was too late."

Although Kyna couldn't see the two older woman she knew they were inspecting her. She wriggled under their gaze and moped. The sickness had come upon her the night of the winter gathering in Adani Hold. She'd complained to her mother, but her mother had thought it was just a cold. When the fever hit, her father called the healer, but it was already too late. Kyna sighed and started crying.

She heard a soft voice in her ear and was lifted off the ground. "I bet you think this sucks, don't you?" Kyna just nodded. "I agree. This is totally unfair." Kyna nodded again and stopped crying. "Why don't you stay here until I sort this out for you?" Kyna nodded a third time and let Magika take her to bed.

Kyna struggled under Media's grasp. "For shards' sake girl, stay still!!"

Kyna wriggled then stopped. She yawned. "Why are you doing this again?"

Media sighed. "Because you're going on a trip with Magika and your hair is a mess." She continued to brush Kyna's long blond hair. According to Media, Kyna was a very beautiful ten year old. She had long blond hair and hazel eyes. She was short and had a medium build. Kyna didn't really care what she looked like though. She sighed and wrung her hands, wishing Media would hurry up.

"There, done." Kyna jumped up and searched for her staff. Media handed it to her and Kyna ran down the stairs and into the door. She could hear Media sigh from the top of the stairs. Kyna muttered to herself and opened the door.

"Good morning Kyna." Magika happily remarked.

"Is it?" Kyna was in a bad mood. First an hour of torture as Media 'brushed' her hair and now a bruised nose. She didn't feel like being polite.

Magika was unphased. "Of course it is. We're going to take Hyth." Kyna was kind of surprised, she'd never ridden dragonback before. She waited where she was and Magika lifted her to Hyth's back.

"Where are we going?" She timidly asked. She could feel the giant gold breathing beneath her.

Magika smiled. "You'll see."

"Not likely." Kyna muttered.

After between even the mountains seem warm Kyna thought to herself as Magika hurried her into the weyr.

"Here we are." Magika announced. "The Healing Den."

"Why are we here?"

"There are some firelizards here. We came to get you one.

If Kyna could see she would have gone wide-eyed. "Really?"

Hours later and back at Adanuk, Kyna sat in front of the firepit, listening to her egg.

"I swear I can hear something inside." She announced to Media who just sighed.

"Course you do dear." Media murmured. It was late at night, but Kyna wouldn't go to bed. The egg wasn't supposed to hatch for a couple of days yet.

Therefore, Media was that much more surprised to see the egg start to rock. She almost fell out of her chair. "What in the.."

Kyna looked up hopefully. "Is it hatching?" She got no reply as Media had ran to the kitchen for meat. Kyna sighed, why did people never answer her?

She reached out for the small egg and felt it rocking. Her heart started to beat faster and she put the egg in her lap. Media just ran in as the little blue firelizard made it's first noise. Media dropped quickly to her knees beside Kyna and gave her some of the meat she'd grabbed. Kyna couldn't see the firelizard, so she didn't know where to hold the meat. The firelizard, on the other hand, could see and smell, and therefore managed to get to the meat on his own.

Kyna laughed as it's little tongue tickled her palm. "What colour is it?"

"Blue." Media told her.

Kyna ran her hand along the firelizard's entire body. Although it seemed a little offended by this action it stood still and let her. She offered it more meat and all was forgiven. "I'm going to call him Adlai."

Magika smiled from the corridor. This is going to be the start of a beautiful friendship, she thought. Media screamed as the firelizard clawed towards her. If Media didn't kill Adlai. Magika laughed and left, walking down the hall to her own room, pleased with herself. She'd sort things out, just like she'd promised.
