LAN -- Local Area Network; a system that links eletronic equipment and forms a network within a building

WAN -- Wide Area Network; A network that uses satellite dishes, radio waves and telephone lines to cover a a larger area then that of LAN, links together elec equip

TCP/IP -- Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol; Used to transmit data over networks and basis for data formation and transmit

MAN -- Metropolitan Area Network; A large city-wide network

UTP -- Unshielded Twisted Pair; A normal US telephone wire -- may be used for computer communication

Ethernet -- Networking techonology that carries data from computer to computer in a network

Coaxial -- A transmission line that carries telegraph, telephone and television signals.

MAC address -- Media Access Control address; the address of a hardware device connected to a shared network medium.

Hostname -- a name ofaswhich a computer has to be identified by on a network for e-mail and other electronic communications

Gateway -- A decive thaToken ring -- lets data move form different networks

ARP -- Address Resolution Protocol; a way to find a certain host's MAC address from the internet address of said user

Packet -- A unit of data sent through a network

Port -- an endpoint in a communications system, where one plugs in cables and wires

HTTP -- Hypertext Transfer Protocol; A protocol used on the world wide web to transfer html documents and info between server snd browsers.

FTP -- File Transfer Protocol; a communications protocol in charge of transferring files from one computer to another on a network

DNS -- Domain Name System; Used on the internet for translating the hostname into an Internet address

WYSIWYG -- What you see is what you get; A word processing or desktop publishing system where the screen will display exactly how the text on the page is drawn (eg. Geocities PageEditor... which explains why many geocities pages are sloppy and overlapping...)

URL -- Uniform Resource Locator; an Internet address (eg. http://www.geocities.com) AKA the thing you type in the thingy up there *points to above bar*

CSMA/CD -- Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Detection; a set of rules determining how the devices in a network will respond when there is a collision.

IEEE -- Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers; A college for engineers, scientists and students

Token Ring -- a type of computer network where the computers are aranged in a circle and a token, a bit pattern, travels around the circle while carrying messages that have been attatched to it

Collision -- what happens when two or more devices try to send data along the same channel at the exact same time. KABLAAAAMOOOO!!!!! >_<

FDDI -- Fiber Distributed Data Interface; FDDI networks are token-passing networks and sends data over a fiber optic cable.

1962 -- RAND Coop starts research into communication networks for military
1962 - 1969 -- Internet first made. Grows into small network for sharing info between supercomputers in USA
1965 -- The DOD's Advanced Research Project Association begins workn 'ARPANET'
1969 - ARPANET connects first 4 universities in the United States.
1970 - 1973 -- The ARPANET is a successDesigned to allow scientists to share data and access remote computers, email quickly becomes popular.
1971 -- The ARPANET grows to 23 hosts connecting universities and government research centers around the US.
1972 -- The InterNetworking Working Group becomes the first of several standards-setting entities to govern the ARPANET. Vinton Cerf, "Father of the Internet", is elected the first chairman of the INWG.
1974 - 1981 -- The general public gets its first hint of how networked computers can be used in daily life. Commercial version of the ARPANET goes online. The ARPANET starts to move away from its military/research
1975 -- Internet operations moved to the Defense Communications Agency.
1982 -- The term 'Internet' is used for the first time
1982 - 1987 -- Bob Kahn and Vint Cerf help create TCP/IP. ARPANET is now seen as an "internet" Personal computer and super-minicomputer industries boom in mid-80s.
1983 -- TCP/IP becomes the universal language of the Internet
1985 -- E-mail and newsgroups now at many universities
1988 - Internet worm unleashed, which disables 6,000 of the 60,000 Internet hosts temporarily. Concerns for privacy soon rise.
1991 - The World Wide Web is born! BOYEAH!!! *happy dance* WWW.!
1992 -- More than 100 000 hosts~~~!
1993 -- First graphic-based web browser made -- Mosaic
1995 -- Java made. Goodie... Coooffeee.... =P Able to use Java to alter stuff on sites (Coolness!)
2001 -- Napster in trouble with legal music stuff, so shuts down.
