ABOUT AUTHORS
Our family,
a couple, Ilya and Irina Magid, emigrated from Leningrad (the
Soviet Union) to our daughter in America in 1991.
In the former Soviet Union we worked in the scientific institutes. I,
Ilya Magid, attained the job title of leading engineer, my wife Irina
was a candidate of Technical Sciences (in America that is Ph.D.)
The Soviet Dictatorship tried to make us an insignificant part of the
state machine just as a screw in a large piece of equipment. That especially
concerned the Jews, who were deprived of their religion, culture and
language. They lost their roots.
Right now we are retired and citizens of America. We live in a building
of elderly people. In America we began to study English (English as
a Second Language) in different colleges (1991-1995). We knew nothing
about Jewish religion. In America we try to connect ourselves to Judaism.
We try to attend many religious classes and we go to the synagogue each
Shabbath and other religious holidays.
Our generation passes to eternity. We try to write stories about our
generation in English. For many years we have had a nice volunteer,
attorney and CPA Steven Siegel who comes to us each Sunday. He
checks our written articles. Ilya thinks that he can not write anything
without the help of Steven.
In America we are free people. We try to change our view on our own
lives and life around us. We want to share with the American readers
our thoughts and impressions about our life in the Soviet Union and
our entering into a new American life. We hope, that our stories will
help others to understand that period of time.
