What
do You Dislike and Like about the United States?
A.
I dislike America because it has too many different kinds of food and
other merchandise. Each kind of food and merchandise has a different price
in different shops. I have to buy at the cheapest price, but without having
enough opportunity to find the cheapest price.
This challenge gives me a very big headache.
The Soviet Union had few different kinds of food and merchandise. Each
kind of product had a constant government price in all the shops.
I had to go to a shop, for example, for food, and I might not find any
food at that shop.
If I did not see the food I had to go to another shop.
If I saw the food I stayed in a long line.
If the food ran out before my turn, I went to another shop.
If I grabbed food, it was O'K.
Very often I couldn't find food anywhere. (In the Soviet Union that situation
was called "Deficit".)
It was a simple rule. I had no headache.
B.
In Boston there are 52 channels on TV. I can't decide and all the time
which channel to watch. I constantly change the channels. I don't know
what I want to see. I receive much information and different opinions.
I don't know what is right. That is bad.
In Leningrad (in the Soviet Union) there were only 3 channels and all
was clear: The Soviet state is the best in the world.
I like America because there I can easily taste candy and cookies. It
is good for me. Often the shops give an opportunity for tasting samples
of the food.
In the Soviet Union candy was very inaccessible to the customers and it
would have been a big scandal to offer these sweets free of charge.
