ABOUT
LEAVING HOME
Scientists search the heavens for another unearthly civilization, but
there was such an unearthly civilization in the Soviet Union.
There everything belonged to the Government: newspapers, TV, plants, shops,
firms, etc. Communication was controlled by the government.
Censorship covered everything in the Soviet Union. Foreign broadcasts
in the Russian language were blocked. By spreading different viewpoints
from the Government a person could go to prison.
The prices of all goods were fixed by the Government. There were very
long lines for goods and foods.
All the people had to work. If they didn't work, they were forced to leave
town and live in an isolated settlement. They were forced to work there.
If anybody made goods secretly and sold them, he could have been imprisoned.
If anybody bought anything in the shops, and sold it for a more expensive
price, he could have been imprisoned.
Money in the Soviet Union was not so important. There I had money, but
it was very difficult to buy goods.
