Black Hole

[In astronomy that is what swallows the stars or even a whole galaxy]


A.Those events happened in Leningrad in our cooperative 9-story building from 1964 to1991. Nobody wrote about them. Only people from our building and the neighboring buildings knew about that, 45 families (about 100 people) lived there.

1. Once one unknown woman jumped to her death from the 8th floor public balcony.

2. One Jewish family, father (barber), mother and daughter (student) lived there in a studio apartment. The daughter was married to a Bangladesh student and he came to live in her apartment also. There was an accident. The student hit his father-in-law with a water bottle on his head and killed him. I saw how the emergency took them away. Somebody told me, there was a closed court and that student was sent back to Bangladesh.

3. Once a band of young boys climbed into the basement of our building. A member of the housing committee tried to drive them out. One boy shot a woman in the heart from a homemade popgun. She was in the hospital. There was a court hearing. Few people knew about that.

4. Once an old person (retired colonel) returned from a holiday to his apartment one day to water his flowers. He forgot his key from his apartment. His apartment with a balcony was on the second floor. He brought a ladder and tried to climb onto balcony. He fell from the ladder and died.

5. In our building in a one bedroom apartment there lived 5 people, including a grandfather (an old person). A big park was across from us. Once, that person went into the park to seek mushrooms. He fell into a hole and was found dead several days later by relatives.


B.A woman told me a story.

"That happened in Karaganda in the 70s. A father took his daughter (13 years old) to a gynecologist. He told the doctor, "She is pregnant". He wanted to advise the doctor to perform an abortion. His daughter wanted to save her child. The doctor had a conversation with her privately. The doctor said, "You want to save the child, but who will feed him?" At last the daughter said that her father raped her. It happened often from the age of 10 years. There was a secret court. The father received a jail sentence. Nobody knew about that case." I think they performed an abortion on that girl.

c. In the Soviet Union there were some airplanes, which crashed. Officially nobody informed people about those cases. But if in the plane there was at least one foreigner, then the government reported the incident in the newspaper, because concealing that would have been impossible.

d. In the Soviet Union there were many ecological catastrophes (for exempla near Chelyabinsk); nobody knew about them. Sometimes we had information about them from a foreign radio station or we read right now in America.
