3.About Life in Big Cities and Small Towns in the Soviet Union

In the Soviet Union- Moscow, Leningrad, Kiev, etc. were in a special position. The Communist Government ordered food from all other regions to be delivered to Moscow, etc. There was always more food there then in other parts of the country.*

* Each citizen in the Soviet Union must reside only in the place, marked in his passport. Citizens in other towns and villages can not move their residence to Moscow, etc.

Other towns and villages had empty shops. As a result, people went to Moscow from regions around 100 miles from Moscow on the train for meat and other food. The same situation existed in Leningrad, Kiev, etc.

Right now it is impossible to order food to be sent to Moscow, etc. The government does not fix the prices of all things and all food. The border is open to them for free trade. All kinds of food exist in the big cities and small towns and villages, but prices are very expensive, especially for pensioners.

One woman from province told me, "All country work for Moscow and Leningrad."
