sheba84: it's my night for bad jokes

    supposed to be insulting ;P.

Hi. My name is Rene Hertsberg. Last summer I went to NDF and was friends with TW. One of the funniest things I remember is during one of Minh's lectures. He asked her what she would do with $1000 and she said save it in a bank account. Minh said, "Dont be so Asian." And so she decided to buy CD's. Hope this brings a smile to someone's face.

well i didnt save anything from online but i rember some conversations we
    had.
    such as
at hopkins she talked about what a great vampire she would make
tina"i think i would make a good vampire"
    tasha"what?"
"i just think it would be cool to be a vampire, i think i would be a good
    vampire"

tina sees ge and my grades(not 4.0 but not bad)
"i am dissapoited in you two"

    "i am just always right"

this is coming from the ld-l...

Dear LD Community,

It saddens me to announce that Tina Wang (Jr. Iowa City West) died this
afternoon, Saturday May 26. While driving in heavy rain and wind to a debate
fundraiser, Tina swerved off the highway, crossed the median and was hit by
a semi truck. Her death was immediate, and she did not suffer.

Tina has been one of my closest friends ever since I first met her in
7th grade. She has always been an enthusiastic debater for Iowa City West,
and became the LD captain this year. Tina was looking forward to Nats in
Oklahoma just a few weeks from now, and another exciting year of debate next
year. Tina was a great person, and will be dearly missed by her entire team
and community.

as I told Weave, I think one of the worst things is that she died before anyone else got to realize how amazing she was.

I'm a debater, and I cant find any words right now that will do justice. I'm sorry.

I am in total shock and sadness. Tina's loss is a great one, and should be felt by the whole community.

Tina was a great person to me, a real shining light in the LD community. She was a great competitor, one of the best in the region. However, I think her real value lay in her genuine caring for others and in the fact that she was an honest person who was very easy to get along with, one of the most likeable people I've ever met in the activity.

I remember the first time I met Tina, at the Ankeny LD Tournament a few years ago. She was just a sophomore, but I remember thinking that she was so talented, so smart... and she was. She debated me in quarterfinals at Debate Cubed and beat me on a 2-1... one of the rounds I remember most in my entire debate career. Then, last year at districts, I debated her in the third round. It was a wonderful round, too. Each of the rounds I've had against Tina were memorable, and I treasure each one of them.

I saw Tina as a competitor last year, but this year, I saw her as so much more. I saw her as a very intelligent, funny, and genuine person who happened to be involved in an activity that I loved. Those types of people are rare, and I treasured her friendship greatly.

There are a lot of other things I could say and want to say, but I honestly can't come up with the words. Tina was one of the best people I've ever met. I will feel her loss for many, many years to come.

I've only judged Tina once, at the Iowa West Novice tourney, when she was a swing debater; and one of the first things I quickly noticed about her was her willingness for criticism. Before the round started she asked if I could give her and her opponent an oral critique and then after the round was over she was all ears. Wanting to know everything I thought about the round. That was of the first real tournament rounds I judged and she just made me realize who much of a pleasure it could be to be in debate.

This is so hard to believe, I'm still in shock... Tina was one of the people who immediately befriended me in my transistion to varsity debating. She came over and started joking with me right after she found out that I had switched up to varsity. She was friendly to everyone, I never heard her say anything bad about another person. She almost always had a smile on her face, and that smile had the tendency to light up the room. Her enthusiasm was infectious, along with her sense of humor. Not only was she a genuinely good person, she was one of those "unsung" great debaters. I only had the pleasure of debating her once, and I can tell you that she was awesome! I got absolutely beaten down by her when I debated her. I am sure that next year she would have been one of the big names on the national circuit. This is so tragic, and very ironic that she died serving the thing that she loved: debate. Her death is a great loss to not only her friends and family, but the debate community as a whole. I will really miss her.

I didn't know her really that well, but I do remember that, while she was very tough and down-to-earth in rounds, she was one of the nicest people I knew outside of rounds. I was in her lab last year at NDF (the Rousseau lab), and I remember the time I hit her (practice rounds) well. The one thought I had was that it was almost funny how she was so calm and fragile outside of a round and how quickly she could make the transition in-round and become one of the best I've seen.
It's really dissappointing to hear...

Reply In memoriam...

We are collecting funny, profound or Tinaish comments Tina said. If you have any IM logs with her, or emails from her, please forward them to [email protected]. If you can remember specific comments she said, those would be appreciated too.

We plan on making a book of the comments, and giving a copy to her parents (she was an only child), and one to the West High school library.

Thank you,

Tina's death is tragic and I would like to express my sympathies to the IC West team, staff, and Tina's family. Eastern Iowa, and the activity of LD, has lost a great competitor and person. I think that we, in the activity, should take a moment to reflect on what makes this activity special and unique to each one of us. It is painful to imagine a debate season without a close friend or coach. It is these people that make the activity special and meaningful. Tina will be missed.
