SUPER MARIO SUNSHINE
BACK TO OFNET

It's-a Mario, yet again! In his ninth game, Mario visits a tropical island called Isle Delfino. It is known for its kind inhabitants, and its wonderful, exotic climate. When Mario and Princess Peach land, they discover that a Mario doppelganger(or evil twin) made out of mud has appeared, coating the island in some kind of goo. The island is normally protected by little yellow shiny things called "Sun Shine Sprites" or something like that. But it seems that they've either been chased away by the muck, or covered under goo. With the help of a talking fire hose/jetpack called FLUDD(don't ask), Mario sets out to clean up the island, recover the Sprites, defeat his hygenically-challenged imposter, and clear his name.
SOUND:
This game's sound is, overall, pretty good. The voice overs aren't half bad. Although that talking jetpack will sometimes get on your nerves. The music is really nice; it's standard Mario fare. In other words, it often tends to melt into the background where you dimly notice it, but not really. The other sound effects are also standard Mario fare. It has the trademark sounds, from the "pa-ling!" you hear when you pick up a coin, to the noise Mario makes when he jumps (circa Mario 64). All of the little noises Mario makes(as he really doesn't say a lot) sound like Mario ought to. That's the way I like it.
Sound score: 10/10
GRAPHICS:
Are you kidding? Nintendo's flagship titles always look good. I even think the GC Zelda looks cool(don't bother emailing me). Mario Sunshine is no exception. There is really a lot of variation in this game. Lush landscapes with lots of color greet you in every area. Even the dirt looks good. The water in the game is very pretty. There are areas in some kind of other dimension where colors jump out at you like a kaleidescope. It's a very pretty game. I really didn't notice any serious graphical problems playing the game at all. The graphics are on the cartoony side, but that's how it's supposed to look. This game fits right in with the rest of the Mario series. It's bright, colorful and very good-looking.
Graphics score: 10/10
GAMEPLAY:
Well, it LOOKS like it could be a kid's game, but it doesn't exactly play like one. It gets somewhat difficult down the line. Bosses require strategy to defeat, and some stages are gonna stretch your puzzle-solving abilities. The game has one thing most 3-D platformers regrettably seem to overlook: FULLY CUSTOMIZABLE CAMERA ANGLES? Anybody listening? Sega? Anybody? Hmm...Anyways, the control is right on the money. Even though Nintendo makes us wonder when they give us weird-looking controllers like the ones for the GC, the control always turns out decent. You'll be hopping and bopping in no time. It's not perfect, though, sometimes, aiming a stream of water while moving can be problematic. Nintendo's effort to add variation to the Mario formula works, but not without flaws. It seems, at times that the FLUDD is kinda gimmicky. Also, there are some stages that seem to be unnecessarily difficult, but that might be the way it's supposed to be. Either that, or I need to work on my hand-eye coordination. The game is set up similarly to Mario 64, with a tiny bit more storyline to it. But it all meshes together pretty well. I don't know how long the game really is; I don't own a Gamecube, and I only got to play it for a few hours when a cousin brought over his console(YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE). The game could conceivably last about 20 or so hours if you play it straight, but I bet that the game lasts a lot longer when you're out for every collectable item in the game. A whole lot longer. In general, it's about on par with Mario 64, only the game looks better, sounds better, and plays a little better.
Gameplay score: 9/10
Overall: 9.5/10
