Who are we?

We are a small group of like-minded people who meet up once a week to keep ourselves fit and at the same time have some fun. We are not an eyeball's out running group aiming to set new records,  we just jog (and walk) for the pleasure that it gives us over countryside lanes and paths. We normally split into three groups that reflect the different levels of ability you will always find in a group. The first group normally runs/jogs for a minimum of  5 miles at a speed of around 10 minutes per mile. The second group consists of those who just wish to cover 3 to 4 miles at a slower pace. The third group is made up of walkers who walk for 2 to 4 miles usually with canine companions.

We stage a number of special events through the year and you will find details of the latest of these on the events page.

For those who require it we run a 4 mile time trial from September through to June culminating in a handicap event for the Jack Phipps Memorial Trophy.

You can read some comments of recent joiners here.

Our History

We were formed in 1984 by a charismatic individual called Brian Steeple who, by his infectious character and good humour, encouraged  dozens of people to take up jogging during his lifetime. Sadly, Brian passed away in 1992 while he was out running a canal towpath in Bradford, but his spirit lives on in the camaraderie that is Wickersley Joggers.

He was succeeded by Jack Phipps, who was anxious that the good work that Brian started was not in vain. Jack was another guy who loved running for pleasure and was one of life's true gentlemen. Under his leadership Joggers moved from strength to strength to what you see today. Jack passed away in 2000 on Wickersley Gorse doing what he loved best.

Reg Peart took over where Jack left off and has been a club stalwart for the last few years organizing all the special events that we are famous for. He has now decided to take a less active role and we were delighted to make him President at our last AGM in recognition of the time and effort he puts in.
