In the beginning all arcane knowledge was transmitted orally. The novice witch learned by heart the chants, spells and rites required to perform an act of magic. As the world became literate, grimoires and Books of Shadows were born. Grimoires are books of ceremonial magic-texts produced during the 14th, 15th, and 16th centuries. A Book of Shadows is the private journal of a witch. Adages, maxims, poetry and secret thoughts as well as the properties of the sacred herbs, spells, incantations, charms, potions and philtres copied down by hand might be found in a typical Book of Shadows. No rule governs binding, number of pages, or contents. Each Volume reflects the personal taste and essence of its author.

With a thorn prick the symbol of the waxing moon in a short, broad candle. Light the candle and with eyes fixed upon the flame, concentrate your wish as you chant:
Gracious Lady Moon,
Ever in my sight,
Kindly grant the boon
I ask of thee tonight.
Blow out the flame but hold the memory of it's light in your mind's eye for as long as you can. A way to make your wish come true will reveal itself.
Plant a bulb of onion in a clay pot that has never previously been used. As you cover it with earth, thrice repeat the name of the one you love. Then daily, morning and evening thereafter, say over it:
As this root grows
And as its blossom blows
May my true love's heart be
Gently turned unto me.
In a one foot length of scarlet yarn, tie nine knots as you say:
These knots I knot,
To know the thing, I know not yet,
That I may see,
The one who is my enemy.
Sleep with the charm under your pillow and a vision of the person who means you harm will appear in a dream.
Select a large red apple. Mark of sections on the outside peel by scraping lines into the skin. Into each of these sections, scrape the name or initials of the persons that you wish as lovers. Tie a string to the stem of the apple and hang it from any support; next twirl the apple around so that when you release it, it will unwind in a clockwise direction. Hold a three-inch needle in your hand and as the apple begins to twirl, close your eyes and repeat this chant:
O great Mother, goddess of love
Who first rode upon the dove;
As I pierce this apple red,
Pierce my lover's heart instead.
As you finish the chant, push the needle firmly all the way through the apple, steadying the fruit with one hand if necessary. The name in the section which the pin has pierced will be your true lover.
Dissolve one heaping teaspoonful of Saleratus (Baking Soda) in a cup of cider vinegar. Soak a compress in the solution and apply directly.
Steep 1/2 teaspoon each of the dried leaves of Summer Savory, Catnip, Yarrow, and Boneset (Comfrey) in a cup of hot water. Stir, strain, and drink at once.
At the waning of the moon as close to the New Moon as possible, raise your athame in salute to the Goddess and God, asking their assistance. Beginning at the front door, walk throughout your home, moonwise (clockwise). At each window, door or other opening make an invoking pentagram with you athame. You may wish to chant as you mark these pentagrams something like "Lord and Lady, ever near, Let no evil enter here". After you have gone through the entire home, visualize your home being sealed with white light. Thank the Lord and Lady for their aid.
Crumble the dried leaves of laurel and scatter them over live coals. As they burn, firm your will and bring the face of your beloved to your mind's eye. Chant...
Laurel leaves,
Burn in fire,
Draw to me
My heart's desire.
