Janet Evanovich
PERPETRATOR CASE FILE: JANET EVANOVICH
Perpetrator Name and Alias: Janet Evanovich (AKA: Jersey Janet).
DOB: Yeah, right, that's happening.
Wanted For: Offenses against literary convention. Since 1994, she has
been a serial offender, breaking every rule in the publishing industry
while consistently hijacking the bestseller lists. Popular mystery novels
(eighth due in June) feature Stephanie Plum, Jersey-girl bounty hunter.
Milieu shmilieu: her main character mostly lives and works in Trenton
and environs. The way she writes it, you can smell it.
Previous Offenses (1986-1992): First score was $2,000 for a romance
novel. Wrote 12 of those in all, mostly for Bantam Loveswept. Quit when
she "ran out of sex positions."
Current M.O.: After blowing off the bodice rippers, developed new style
and subject matter over the course of a two-year "retooling." Hung with
street cops and law enforcement types, absorbed the way they talked, thought
and acted. Learned about guns, mace, handcuffs, arrest procedures and
cursing like a stevedore. Created Stephanie Plum as "every woman" (assuming
every woman is thirty-something, coif challenged, saddled with a wacky
family, devoted to a hamster, and prone to checking out any male who happens
to look good in a T-shirt).
