Rei is a priestess at the temple where she lives.  While beloved by the local children, her spooky powers have made her the victim of ridicule by her classmates at the private school she attends.  Though Serena comes to her defense, she refuses to accept her as a friend.  She senses something bad coming and begins investigating the disappearance of girls near her temple and finds them trapped in an alternate dimension.  When Sailor Moon is not strong enough to defeat the monster holding them, she learns she is Sailor Mars and saves the day.  Even once she learns Usagi is Sailor Moon and should be her teammate, she refuses to work with her.  It is revealed that she witnessed her mother's lonely death as a child, and her workaholic father abandoned her at them temple.  She becomes friendly with the Scouts slowly after Makoto mistakes her for being kidnapped and comes to save her.  Her father's actions and not being there for her mother's death have made her bitter and hostile towards him.  Some could view his actions as leaving her in a place where someone would have time to give her the attention he could.  He reveals to her that the dinners he plans for her are not to make him look good as she had thought, but just an excuse to see her.  They are able to reconsile eventually.  Rei is the first to learn Minako is Sailor Venus, and the two form an instant rivalry, each angered by the other's haughty attitude.  In an attempt to awaken her Sailor powers, Minako gets Rei to sing for sick children under the alias "Mars Reiko".  She also reveals to Mars that she is second-in-command of the princess' guardians and must take over when she is not there.  Rei is also the first to learn that Minako has a fatal illness and little time left, and that she refuses to have a surgery that could save her because the chances are low and she has a mission to fulfill from her past life.  Her disregard for her own life angers Rei, who has unwillingly come to think of her as a friend, and she begins to hate that everyone is living by the past.  She becomes distant with the other Scouts, but eventually decides to finish up her past mission so she can move on with her life.  In the meantime, she hears Minako is going to quit singing and resumes her role as Mars Reiko to compel her to compete with her, also giving her at least one fun day as a normal teenage girl with friends.  When Minako still refuses to have the surgery, Rei reveals that she knows she has not even awakened her own Sailor powers and is thus not fit to be their leader.  While her friends view this action is harsh, Rei only does it in hopes Minako will go through with the operation if she can no longer fight.  When Minako's illness stops her from transforming, she finally decides to have the surgery, but supposedly dies before it even takes place.  Rei is the first to learn, from Artemis, and is a sad rage destroys a whole group of monsters on her own, then breaks down crying and reveals Minako's death to the others.  She later wields Venus' weapon along with her own in an attempt to stop Princess Serenity from destroying the world, but fails.  She regains her life when the world is restored by Usagi and Mamoru, but remembers nothing about her Scout life until they return.  She then reunites with her friends.  In the Special Act, she is training in the mountains to strengthen her powers and, along with Luna, is the first to sense a new evil.  She is injured by it and remains in the hospital while the other Scouts fight it, though she is with them in spirit.  Is well enough to attend Usagi's wedding to Mamoru.
