| I would like to take some space to share why I like Harry Potter so much. Well, first off when I was younger I hated reading. All of my teachers kept telling me how important it was that I learned to like it, but I just couldn't. When I was in middle school my cousin told me during our lunch about a book she was reading. She said she was up to the part where this kid had millons of letters comming into his house through his fireplace! I had never heard of anything like that happeneing in a book! I asked her what book it was, because I thought that anything that cool had to make an interesting story. She told me that it was called Harry Potter. At that point nobody had really heard of it before, it wasn't the big name that it is now. One day my family went to wal-mart and we had to pass the books on our way by. As I passed one book caught my eye. I went over to it and looked it over - "yup, this is the one she was talking about!" - I was so excited that I found it and it was the only one they had. I took it over to my parents and asked if I could have it. They thought it was very strange that I was excited over a book. But, they got it for me anyway. I took it home and started reading and expirenceing the magic of the young wizard's journey. I found it hard to put it down and that was the start of my love of reading. Then awhile after I finished that one I got the second and the forth at k-mart. So I read the second one, then I hit a "little snag" I didn't want to read the forth untill I read the third and any place we looked we couldn't find it. Luckily on our vacation in virginia we took a trip to a book store, my aunt wanted to add a new novel to her collection, and while there I found the third one. But, my parents said they didn't have enough extra money for it. That's when my aunt came to the rescue. She wanted to embrace my new found love of books so she bought it for me. So, I was set to go I continued on my way of reading through the young wizard's journey. My cousin and I then heard rumors of a Harry Potter movie. We were very excited and hoped that they were true. Soon after we found that they were indeed true. Shortly after hearing the release date of the movie I asked my father if he'd take me to go see it because my mother wasn't very fond of theaters. He said he would and I could hardly wait! Then a month before the movie was to make it's big debut something happened that changed my life forever. We were in wal-mart again and my father felt dizzy so he sat down while my mom went and got the van. She pulled up and she and a friend of the family that saw us there helped him into the van. next thing I remember is that he was in the hospital and they told us that he had had everal small strokes. Then he was shipped out to another hospital in another state. I went to see him there. He couldn't hear, couldn't move, couldn't talk, couldn't feel, and he could only move his eyes up and down. He looked about 20 years older than he was, his hair was all white and there were IV's and all kinds of tubes all over him. He was in there all of october and still there in november. The doctors told us that what we saw was more or less what we'd get, he'd never change. So, seeing how my father was not able to go to the movie with me I talked to my friends and we decided to go together because I know my father would have wanted me to go even if he couldn't take me. Then the morning of november 16th, 2001 - the day Harry Potter would be premiring - we got a phone call as we were getting ready for school. My father had died at 2:30 that morning. I decided that I'd go to school as planned and later go to that movie with my friends. I knew that my father would have wanted me to go. So when in school I told my friends what happened and told them that we were still going to go see Harry Potter. But, about half way through the day one of my best friend's mothers called and told him that she didn't think that he should go because she knew what had happened and she thought I needed some time. She more or less told him not to go, but he told her quite firmly - " yes, I know what happened, she told me.. and yes I am going because she needs me right now." - So, we went as planned and we all knew, although unspoken, that that night was deticated to my father and his memory. Ever since that day to me Harry Potter is linked to my father and his memory. That is why i'm so attached to it and why I will continue to be most likely untill the day I die. Even now at 19 any time I am over stressed or had a bad day I can excape by picking up a Harry Potter book. I have so far seen each movie on the night it came out, the last movie (the forth one) I got to see at midnight the night before it was to come out. I have as well so far gotten each movie on dvd the day it came out. I got the fifth book with my cousin at 6 o'clock in the morning, having had gotten up at 5 because it was an hour drive to the book store. The sixth book my cousin and I both went and got at midnight. And I'm hopeing to be able to do the same when the final one comes out. You can call me a Harry Potter freak if you want I don't care because to me it's the memories attached to it. |
