::Once met::
Emma Caulfield
Caulfield's pre-Anya career consisted mainly of television and guest spots, ranging from work on Nash Bridges and General Hospital to an appearance alongside 'Dustin "Screech" Diamond' on Saved By The Bell: The New Class. But television junkies might best recal her from her full season on Beverly Hills 90210, as Susan Keats, Brandon Walsh's college sweetheart. Upon arriving in Sunnydale to begin her Buffy stint, it was the writing that most impressed her about the show and continues to amaze.
  "A lot of pilots for tv shows are so banal, so completely void of any originality or character," Caulfield says. "I'm lucky to come here week after week and work on a show that continues to redefine itself and continues to surprise you."
  We last spoke to Caulfield in issue 11, when Anya was a little more than a recurring character and a gleam in Joss Whedon's ever plotting-mind. She's now earned a spot as a series regular and the faithful fiancee of Xander Harris. A catch-up chat with Caulfield was long over-due, so one afternoon on the
Buffy set, we sat down with Caulfield after a long day of shooting and some Scrabble trash-talking to a visiting Marc Blucos. It quickly became clear that with such a savvy and funny actress behind her, Anya will continue to confound and entertain the Scoobygang for some time to come.
Quiet you'll miss the humourous conclusion!
BM: How has your life changed since you've become such a vital part of the cast?
EC: Am I vital?
BM: Well I think so.
EC: Thank you. How has my life changed? I guess probably the biggest change has been the amount of time I have to myself. The hours are pretty long. They were long when I started, but now, as opposed to coming in once every so many episodes, I'm here three or four days a week. It gets pretty brutal, but its great. Its fun to experience the evolution of Anya. I don't think anybody knew she'd end up becoming the comic relief along with Nicholas Brendon. That's sort of our role right now, which is great for me. I love doing comedy, and it's something I've always had difficulty getting opportunities to do. People usually tend to not want to cast me as a funny girl. It's been great.
