| For this Sunday show, a smaller crowd was on hand to catch this shorter four band set as these shows are typically four band sets that clock in at exactly three hours time and over, generally, by eleven o' clock; perfect for a Sunday night. The bands included on this bill certainly had a distinct hardcore edge to them, with really only one being a true to the book hardcore sound. Each of the bands put together, on the whole, a solid night if only a small crowd and a rather laid back atmosphere was the mood of the night. Opening this night was a short, maybe fifteen minute set from the Napa area grindcore / hardcore / noisecore don't-really-know-what-you-call-it sound of Accidental Decapitation Through Masturbation (or ADM for short). Bringing with them possibly the most off center, buzzed, blistered ride through a sound oft unheard, ADM put together a set that was easily the most interesting and definently wierdest sets appearing on these reviewed pages. On stage, the band pumped through a concise set of tunes, most notably those appearing on thier self-titled, currently available disc which boasts ten songs in just under eight minutes. With that in mind the band actually did a couple of short songs, one of which only lasted about two beats and a whopping two seconds. ADM, for the most part, moves at a blinding speed, occasionally changing up the tempo to throw in some heavier chunk driven material only to step right back into thier complete ball of confused metal sound. At one point these guys broke into a free style grindcore type of thing where they were not even really performing a song, but rather just moving with the tune and belting vocal noises and thier trademark higher ended scream mixed with occasional heavy grunts. This set was bizzare in every sense of the word, lasting that short amount of time but seemingly putting nough material to complete thier entire set. No doubt this band has a very loose attitude, style and over all feel, often times loosing sense of any kind of precision, but thier anger and just straight off-the-wall way has something of a hook. This sound is definitely not for everyone as most will just walk out the dorr in confused disgust, but a closer look reveals thier direction. Different, to say the least. |

| The band who appears first on this split cassette is accidental decapitation through masturbation who is (in my opinion) one of the most odd bands around. They are hardcore punk / grind with keyboards and crazy screamed manic bursts of fury which is totally four-track core. The other band, of course, is Vomitous Upheaval (Oklahoma) and they play 'grindcore for the socially impared' and basically ( or at least for the most part) covers the type of sound that ADM represents. Hmmm... that made no sense. This release is more or less to represent ADM than anything - nice kids with good intentions. |
