There was a time when Maggie Siu was TVB's much sought after actress with proven acting skills famous especially for portraying strong and determined female characters. This past year, she has participated in two drama serials for TVB - "At a Threshold of an Era" and "Healing Hands 2" - the first one paired with Nicky Wu, playing a strong career woman but the outcome didn't turn out as great or one of her great work due to her short screen time or seldom short speeches.
In "Healing Hands 2" again it is the shadow of a strong-minded career woman portraying a renowned gynecologist/obstetrician who has a May-December(older woman/younger man) romance with Raymond Cho Wing Yeem. Because
Raymond is still not as widely known, he naturally is the instigator of this relationship. Maggie Sui's character was created with credibility and care, dedicated to her job and because of previous failure in another May-December fling has turned into an ice-cold maiden. On one hand, her boundless love for the newborn babies she delivers shows her outer-cold-inner-warm nature while her high expectations of her younger sister's (portrayed by Fiona Yuen) achievement shows the committed love but strict discipline that was at times overbearing and overplayed, but nevertheless reveals a lively and passionate character.
This type of character is familiar staple for Maggie, not difficult for her to portray especially since the two main co-stars she shares the screen with, Raymond and Fiona, are newcomers with limited acting experiences and making it possible for Maggie to steal the show by turning in a higher
caliber of acting in comparison to theirs. Just carefully studying her character's daily expressions - the bright eyes, every brow movement, every smile, especially the shots of her hidden grief and anguish tears coping the death of her sister and when she finally reveals to Raymond all her pent up feelings and passions - all of this Maggie gave much thought and deliberation before manifesting on screen. Looking at another
angle, this is Maggie's talent and unique brand of acting which not only the newer less experienced generation but even some lackluster veterans contended with as she stole the show in this memorable and representative performance.
